What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Matroosberg Nature Reserve offers stunning mountain scenery and adventure activities like hiking and 4x4 trails. Visitors praise the breathtaking views and the potential for snow in winter. However, some guests have reported issues with outdated accommodation and slow service at the restaurant, suggesting careful booking and preparation are key.
"Wonderful place to visit, had the warmest welcome, our host was very attentive and helpful. We stayed at the traditional campsite (they do have campsites with electricity points too) Area is well kept and plenty to do and see. Would definitely recommend."

"Officially the highest peak we have climbed. Starting at 1250m above sea level and takes you up to the peak at 2249m which makes it the third highest peak in the Western Cape, Boland Region. 19km will get you huffing and puffing but the majestic mountains and awesome views will calm you down, hopefully. Jeep track available for the 4x4 enthusiasts, but it's no joy drive. It's a gradual climb to Grootkopkloof where the Jeep track ends for the 4x4s. But for the hikers its gets serious from here with another 2 hours to the peak. Very rocky path so stay focused when stepping. You will pass a zip line station house , not sure if it's operational, but continue until the top where you will be rewarded with mindblowing views and the mountains surroundings is something to behold. The trail is easy to follow and well kept. In winter with the snow is another story. Gates opens at 8, so and early start is recommended. It's a full day hike so prepare accordingly and dress appropriately. My pics don't do justice, so get out there and experience what 2249m above sea level feels like. You will love it..take in the beauty, juice up, refuel and start your way back down the same way.....hike smart and stay safe."

"We went as a big group of 50 for a weekend of hiking. The reserve is massive. There is a trail up to the top which takes around 3.5 hours one way. From there it is possible to continue to the summit with another 2 hours walk. There is a very challenging 4x4 track which meets the walking trail at the top but is closed due to rain damage. On the way you see multiple waterfalls and streams especially after rains. It is worth hiking all the way for the views. If you are lucky you may get some snow on top. The trail is quite dangerous due to stream crossings and slippery paths so best done in a group. The accommodation huts are good. Food at the restaurant is also quite good but the order takes long if there are too many people. The roads inside are all gravel roads which can be tackled with a small car but must be very careful."
