Reviews Summary
Pilgrim's Rest is cherished for its historical significance as a gold rush town and its preserved heritage. Visitors appreciate the glimpse into the past offered by the museum and the opportunity to support local artisans. However, some feel the town has lost some of its former vibrancy and tourist appeal, describing it as somewhat rundown.
"This History Filled little "ghost town" is not the same it was years back. There isn't the same effort to boost tourism in the area anymore. Yet, if you are in the area it's worth taking the children to explore and experience how people used to live. The Little House Museum is a good example. There is an information office where you can but tickets needed to go on a Guided Toor to the Diggings. There are lots of stalls where locals sell their interesting crafts. There are a few little shops selling necessary groceries and some shops explore olden days items."

"Pilgrim’s Rest is a small museum town which is protected as a heritage site. It was the second of the Transvaal gold fields, attracting a rush of prospectors in 1873, soon after the MacMac diggings started some 5 kilometres away.
For many years Pilgrims Rest used to be a popular tourist destination. I remember visiting the town as a little girl, where the shop owners used to dress up in the typical period clothing and the shops sold knick knacks and items of the bygone years, but now, it has turned into a ghost town, rundown and neglected, the bygone days forgotten, besides the Museum and a few of the shops that give us a glimpse of our heritage and the lives of our forefathers."
