"If you think you got what it takes to hike this trail, then it's a must because this overnight hike will take everything you got. It's go time from the start, uphill all the way to to fantastic and well kept overnight hut. Definitely need a level of fitness, even so carrying all you stuff for the overnight adds to the struggle, lol. But it's worth every step. The hike is awesome, start as early as you can, lots to take in and the view if the Koo Valley is just breathe taking. Only 20 people allowed on the trail because there are only 20 beds available at the hut. Fully equipped hut, lovely shower and flashing toilets. Rooms are first come first bases. Going up is a challenge and getting back down. It's a loop, done anti clockwise and the trail is clearly marked. Autumn and Spring are good times to do this hike. I don't want to spoil it for you but like I said this is a bucket list tick off hike and you can buy a badge to sow on your jacket for bragging rights. Well get out there, hike safe , check the weather report, dress appropriately and hike safe."

This trail has plenty to offer and is an amazing overnight adventure. The climbs on day one offer beautiful views and enough landmarks and water points to add interest and nature in different guises to enrich your hiking experience. The hut is a masterpiece and by far the best hut we’ve been to in our overnighting adventures. It’s stunning and has amazing views. Very well suited for a group of friends who want to escape and be embraced by nature. The trail comes highly recommended.
Day 1:
Pros:
Well established trail. Well marked with yellow arrows.
Majestic mountain views that make you think you’re somewhere else. It’s hard to believe this trail is outside of Montague, which I always thought was rather arid. This trail is beautifully green and lush.
The hut is amazing. Three bedrooms with bunk beds, some of which are double. Can sleep plenty of people. Lounge area with kitchen and basin. Seating and table in the lounge. Fireplace in lounge. Lights from solar panels. Bathroom with two showers and two toilets. Donkey boiler for hot water. Outside braai area. Stoep as well. Gorgeous views of the Montagu valley. Best overnight hike hut we've been to. Bedrooms upstairs with a few beds down below. Mattresses are comfy. Hut is built into the mountain. Exposed rock for walls. There are even ferns growing on the rock faces.
Rock pools on the way up plus another at the top. Water can be obtained from these. Round about the 5km and 9km marks.
Plenty of flowers to be seen, especially proteas.
We felt safe throughout the hiking experience
Cons:
Safe parking is an issue. Prior arrangements may need to be made to drop you off and fetch again. I would not want to leave my car outside or inside the reserve unattended.
Day 2:
Pros:
Ascend at the beginning, which is worth-while doing early to witness sunrise over distant peaks. It was spectacular.
From there steep descends with unexpected climbs and diversions from the finish/starting point. Initial views from the top spectacular. Descent into kloof was beautiful as well. Hundreds of amazing flowers, which I think are a type of Nerine.
Cons:
After the kloof the trail lacks a bit of excitement as you return to the starting point. Mostly fynbos and shrubs with the same views as the start"
