What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Guests rave about the unparalleled uniqueness of staying in a luxury train carriage suspended over the Sabi River, offering constant wildlife viewing and an unforgettable experience. The all-inclusive nature, exceptional food, and dedicated safari guides are frequently praised, though some minor service inconsistencies and a desire for more casual dining were noted.
"We had the most incredible stay at Kruger Shalati. Honestly, I can’t imagine staying anywhere else in Kruger when you have the chance to sleep in a train perched above the river, watching hippos, elephants, and so much more wander by. The view alone was worth far more than our three days there!
A huge shoutout to Sipho, our safari guide. He was outstanding—his knowledge of the animals, birds, and the bush was unbelievable, and he went above and beyond to make sure we saw everything on our wishlist. We were often out earlier and back later than other groups because he was so dedicated. You could truly feel his passion for the wildlife, and it made our experience unforgettable.
The rooms were flawless and cleaned twice a day, the food was exceptional, and they even surprised me with a birthday cake for my 30th. Every detail felt thoughtful.
The only area that could be improved is the level of warmth and friendliness from the waiting staff. Each guest is assigned two servers—one for the morning and one for the evening—but ours felt a little reserved. A bit more conversation and engagement would have made the experience even better.
I would recommend Kruger Shalati to absolutely anyone visiting Kruger, and I genuinely hope I get to return one day."

"First class experience all round, the location is right next to the Oliphants river where you can occasionally see hippo’s whether you stay at the lodges or on the train. We stayed at a lodge which was spacious and right next to the main building. You don’t have to stay on the train to use the lovely plunge pool overlooking the river or the bar, it’s also where tea is served at 4pm. The quality, choice and service at the restaurant far exceeded my expectations. Basic drinks included were more than adequate. The game drives saw pretty much all the animals we expected, Sidney our driver was a great guy and although young very knowledgable. There is also the old station a couple of mins walk with a shop, bar and restaurant at well, not included in the package. All in all a great experience, ok not cheap but when everything is included and at the quality all round, its great value for money."

"Fabulous accommodation in converted train carriages overlooking the Sabi river. The train is parked on a long aqueduct and each of the carriages have been converted to 5 star hotel accommodation. Each carriage has fantastic views over the Sabi river where you could spot all sorts of wildlife from elephants, Impala hippos etc. if you can request a room in a carriage between one and 12, you will have the very best views and not too far to walk for breakfast! One of the middle carriages has been converted to a bar with a lovely terrace decking and plunge pool where you can spend a very pleasant afternoon sipping a gin and tonic or whatever your tipple might be. If you have the opportunity to stay here, you really should it’s highly recommended."
