I don’t know how many million people would die if it would happen today but it was 200 000 years ago. Reviews Summary

Tswaing Meteorite Crater is a site of immense geological significance, offering a unique hiking experience. Visitors appreciate the educational value, especially when guided, and the impressive scale of the crater. However, many note that the on-site facilities are run-down and poorly maintained, detracting from the overall visitor experience.

"We finally got the opportunity to hike the Tswaing Meteorite Crater situated next to Soshanguve, which is part of the hiking trails in the Pretoria area. It took a while because it’s far out.

Our Hiking Club prearranged the hike at the cost of R60 pp. Before the hike, we attended a presentation that educated us about all things Tswaing Meteorite Crater, which took about 25 minutes.

After the presentation, we took a 2.5km drive to the starting point of the crater hike. Along this 2.5km drive, I saw a sign that pointed towards accommodation. I did not get a chance to go and check it out, but just know that it’s on offer should you be interested.

Then, they have tables where you can picnic at the starting point. There is no coffee shop or restaurant on site. ☹️

The trail is just over 7km long and loops down into the crater and back up to the starting point. It has an elevation of 119 meters.

As we made our way around the crater, there were points of interest where our guide stopped and shared some knowledge with us. Because of this, the trail took 3 hours to complete.

Along the hike, you can expect to see old run-down structures built when they mined in the area. The vegetation around the crater is primarily a mixture of savanna and grassland ecosystems.

My overall experience with the Tswaing Meteorite Crater Hike is okay if you go in a group with a guide. Lower your expectations about the venue. You can’t compare it to private venues like Wolwespruit in Pretoria or Torako Trail Park in Johannesburg.

That is it for a brief review. I hope this inspires you to hike the Tswaing Meteorite Crater. For more things worth doing and places worth seeing. Check out ThinkAdventure.guide"

"Great if you want to be on a 7.2km trail all on your own, except... the boundary fence is down there's no security on the trail, the facilities are run down (all the braai stands at rest stops have been vandalised), we only saw monkeys (mainly by the reception centre going through the trash), saw two bird species, plant species lacking, bins aren't emptied.
You can 3km walk from the reception to the picnic spot and then hike the 7km, or drive to the picnic spot and then hike or drive to the boom gate just up the crater.
Badly managed for a place of meteorological significance. Been there twice before, first as a third grader, then while studying in varsity. Deteriorated significantly."

"Loved it! Tswaing is the home of a meteorite crater that happened about 220 000 years ago and the remains of an old salt factory. It has interesting Hiking trials, and sometimes hosts various events."

The Geological Marvel: Tswaing Meteorite Crater

The Tswaing Meteorite Crater, also known as the Tswaing Crater, is a significant geological site located approximately 40 kilometers north of Pretoria, South Africa. This impressive impact structure was formed around 220,000 years ago when a meteorite, estimated to be a few thousand tons, struck the Earth's surface. The impact created a crater approximately 1.13 kilometers in diameter and 200 meters deep, with a distinctive central uplift. Instagram+1

Scientists have studied Tswaing extensively, revealing valuable insights into impact processes and the Earth's geological history. The site also holds archaeological significance, with evidence of human activity dating back thousands of years. The name 'Tswaing' itself comes from the Setswana word for 'Place of Salt,' referring to the salt pans that formed within the crater after the impact. Instagram

Visiting Tswaing offers a unique opportunity to witness the raw power of cosmic events and understand their lasting impact on our planet. The surrounding landscape, a mix of savanna and grassland, adds to the natural beauty of the site. Instagram

The trails can be enjoyed independently, but joining a guided hike, often organized by groups like the Centurion Hiking Club or DITSONG Museums, significantly enhances the educational value and overall experience.
