Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the Swartberg Circle Route's spectacular mountain scenery and the engineering marvel of the Swartberg Pass. The drive is described as breathtaking and humbling, with many appreciating the unique Karoo landscapes. However, some find the pass challenging and recommend a suitable vehicle, while others note the limited facilities and the need for preparedness.

"We did it!
We were blessed with a clear blue sky on a 10-Sep-25 morning, driving Northbound from Oudtshoorn. The ride was a Toyota Starlet Cross Manual with three people and all our luggage onboard. It didn't even struggle. Traffic was light, only met with four passing vehicles. The gravel road was wide enough for two cars to pass at ease. We made five stops which provided some parking spaces. I have marked the GPS below:
-1st Viewpoint: -33.362456, 22.077104
-2nd Viewpoint: Skelmdraai -33.363694, 22.065356
-3rd Viewpoint: -33.358598, 22.054221
-4th Viewpoint: Die Top -33.35215, 22.04618
-5th Viewpoint: Teeberg -33.328908, 22.043043
Just be on the lookout at every turn. You will enjoy it.
Stay safe!

"Winter 2019, some snow. This was naturally an experience getting to the Pass as this is a bit 'off track' compared to regular touristic points of interest. A 4x4 is recommended if you don't want to scratch the undersides of your car.
The Swartberg Pass is a mandatory visit. There are many walking tracks up there. Although keep in mind, it gets cold and windy in winter, and the road might be closed."

"From Prins Albert Town to Oudtshoorn. Very treacherous and steep climb. Narrow one car road. Can be done in a car but preferably in a stronger vehicle. Sights are spectacular and worth the nearly 2 hour drive. God really enjoyed creating this mountain pass."

Constructed between 1886 and 1888, this 24-kilometer gravel road snakes its way over the Swartberg Mountains, connecting Oudtshoorn and Prince Albert. It's a National Monument and a significant part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's crucial to be aware of the pass's conditions. In winter, snow can lead to temporary closures, and the road can become slippery. Always check local weather reports before setting out.
