What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the breathtaking natural beauty and incredible hiking trails, particularly the Tugela Gorge. However, many note that the park's facilities and access roads are in significant need of maintenance, which can detract from the experience.
"Incredible location, beautiful scenery, and great hikes! I came to this beautiful park to do the Tugela Gorge hike and absolutely loved it! There are a few hikes to do here and definitely need to come back
I did not stay on the premises or encountered issues with the trail. The trail is a bit overgrown with grass in some places, but it's navigable
The park itself, like facilities, roads, and signage is in need of that all important word: maintenance! Most of the stuff looks like it hasn't been maintained in decades
The roads especially, in less than 3 years I'll be recommending you go through with a high clearance vehicle only.
The access road into the park is even worse shape, more potholes than road and some potholes were only filled with soil"

"Incredible location, with fantastic hiking. A real treasure.
Sadly the park is a little run down, road access is terrible, many trails are overgrown or in need of track work to manage water run off etc.
Facilities are dated or poorly managed eg the tourist info centre.
I hope some maintenance will take place to ensure tourism continues and that this might benefit locals who require the visitors for work etc."

"With its stunning natural scenery, the park is well worth a visit. You’ll get some breathtaking views of the Amphitheatre from the tar road running through the park, as well as on the approach to the park. That road is heavily potholed, so remember to keep your eyes on the road.
Once in the park, you can park your car near the Mahai campsite and do a short or long hike. Remember to sign in with the guard at the parking so they can find you if you get lost.
If you have only a little time, do the 1-hour walk (there and back) along the river to the cascades. The path is paved, mostly flat, and often shaded by trees. It’s a beautiful short hike for people of any age. Take care at the little arch bridge at the end: it no longer has guardrails."

Navigating the Roads: A Traveler's Tale
Despite the challenges, the breathtaking scenery that awaits makes the effort worthwhile for many. However, it's crucial to be prepared. If you're planning a visit, ensure your vehicle is in good condition and consider the type of car you're driving. Some online discussions mention issues even with 2WD vehicles attempting to reach specific points like the Sentinel car park. This underscores the importance of checking recent road reports or local advice before you set off.
The Tugela Gorge Hike: An Immersive Experience
As you progress along the trail, you'll discover numerous crystal rock pools, which are a major draw for hikers. These pools offer a perfect opportunity for a refreshing dip, especially on a warm day. It's highly recommended to pack your swimsuit and a towel to take advantage of these natural swimming spots. While the trail is generally well-trodden, some sections might be a bit overgrown with grass, so wearing appropriate footwear is advised. Remember to sign in with the park guard before you start your hike; this is a safety measure so that park officials know your plans and can locate you if necessary.
Park Facilities: A Mixed Bag
For instance, the tourist information center and the park shop are noted as being in a state of disrepair or lacking sufficient stock. While the natural environment is the primary draw, the condition of the facilities can impact the overall visitor experience. Travelers are advised to manage their expectations regarding modern amenities and to come prepared with essentials, as services might be limited. Despite these shortcomings, the overwhelming sentiment is that the stunning scenery and hiking opportunities make the park a worthwhile destination.
