What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors often find the Vredefort Dome to be a place of immense geological significance, with its vastness and history being major draws. However, the experience can be hampered by a lack of clear signage, private land ownership restricting access, and the absence of a central educational facility. Booking guided tours is frequently recommended to fully appreciate the site.
"It's not what I thought it would be at all. The minute you enter the road to the dome, you are already in the dome.
You'll find a couple of businesses inside that area. I went to a 4x4 hiking spot and there we met a very helpful auntie Lauren, who gave us the history of the dome. How an astroid fell on that part, which reshaped the mountains making a circle (dome) shape and how it impacted the rocks and how it brought gold closer to the surface of the soil.
The lesson was great, the lack of resources and the fact that you would expect some type of educational center but not find it was disappointing.
But the 4x4 hiking is a must for the area, there are also a couple of other activities in the area for nature and adventure lovers"

"Don't follow Google maps, go to Vredefort or Parys and ask for a 4 x 4 guided tour. The property is all privately owned. We did a fantastic sunset tour and learned all about the geology"
Antonia Nicol
"This is not the right location on maps.
We went to the right location today (from Vereeniging) only to be met at the "gate" by some armed guys telling us it is private property now.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME"
