What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Gentle Monster Sinsa-dong for its unique, art-filled environment and stylish eyewear collections. The store's design and the integrated Nudake cafe are frequently highlighted as major draws. However, some customers have experienced issues with the strict 'no refund' policy and occasional unhelpful staff interactions, particularly regarding product defects or exchanges.
"We went at about 3pm on a Thursday in June. It wasn't too crowded as we didn't have to wait to get in. The place was 4 floors with an equal selection on each floor. Checkout is tax free and quick. If you like their product and want to see the flagship store, it is worth a visit."

"Let me start off by saying I am a foreigner and don’t speak any Korean.
There was a huge miscommunication with the sales associate, who did not speak fluent English. My sister and I separately bought a pair of sunglasses each on October 4. I purchased “By Row GC12”. I wanted to try the sunglasses out in the sun, but was not allowed unless they were first purchased. The associate stamped my receipt with “no refund, no exchange”. My sister’s receipt did not receive this stamp. I do not understand why my sunglasses are unable to be returned.
After trying on the sunglasses outside in the sun, I started getting really bad headaches. The sunglasses have a very different effect when worn in the store (no natural light) compared to outside in the sun. The sunglasses are stylish, but their functionality is not up to standard. I tried to return the sunglasses the same exact day (October 4) just a few hours later, and was denied. The sunglasses are in the same condition as it was sold to me.
I am deeply dissatisfied with the product and wish to return it.
I am only in Seoul for a few days. I don’t believe they are willing to compromise with me. Therefore I will contact my bank to refuse the charge for an inferior product."

"Going to the store was quite an experience, still the Store is much smaller and a bit less impressive than it appears in the photos. It has 4 levels, but each level is somewhat small.
The checkout is on the fourth floor and the staircases are really small. I didn't talk to the Staff except when I already decided on what I want to buy, I was hoping someone could help me with what shape fits my face, but that didn't happen. The store was definitely cool to see because of all the art installations, and I'm happy with my purchase."

The Gentle Monster Experience: More Than Just Sunglasses
This focus on experiential retail is a key differentiator. Unlike traditional stores, Gentle Monster prioritizes visual storytelling and artistic expression, making the act of browsing eyewear a cultural outing. The integration of the Nudake cafe on the ground floor further enhances this, offering a culinary complement to the visual feast.
Visitors often remark on the store's unique atmosphere, noting that it feels more like an exhibition space than a typical retail outlet. This artistic approach, combined with their distinctive eyewear designs, has cemented Gentle Monster's status as a must-visit destination for fashion and art enthusiasts in Seoul.
Navigating Purchases and Policies
It's recommended to thoroughly try on any eyewear you're considering, both inside the store and, if possible, stepping outside to see how they look and feel in natural light. Some customers have reported issues with sunglasses performing differently in sunlight compared to the store's lighting, leading to discomfort or dissatisfaction.
While the staff are generally praised for their effort in assisting customers, especially those with language barriers, their adherence to the strict return policy can be a point of contention. Understanding these policies upfront can help manage expectations and ensure a smoother shopping experience.
The Sinsa-dong Neighborhood: A Fashion Hub
Visitors often combine a trip to Gentle Monster with exploring nearby Garosu-gil Street, known for its tree-lined avenue filled with independent shops, designer stores, and charming cafes. Other popular brands like Tamburins and Nonfiction also have a presence in the vicinity, making it a prime destination for a full day of shopping and exploration.
This concentration of high-end and independent fashion retailers, coupled with the artistic flair of Gentle Monster and its integrated Nudake cafe, makes Sinsa-dong a key area for experiencing Seoul's contemporary fashion and lifestyle scene.
