"Traditional buildings in folk style"

Marian Markovic

"Gyeongju Hyanggyo is the best central educational institution in Silla. It was founded in 682 (the 2nd year of King Sinmun’s reign) and the academy was established in 987 (the 6th year of King Seongjong’s reign). In 1492 (the 23rd year of King Seongjong’s reign), the Hyanggyo was established in its current location. After being destroyed during the Imjin War, Daeseongjeon was rebuilt in 1600 (the 33rd year of King Seonjo’s reign) and Myeongnyundang was built in 1614 (the 6th year of King Gwanghae’s reign). Gyeongju Hyanggyo, the best in Yeongnam, operates more than 10 courses in its various buildings as well as its main classrooms, Hyanggyo restaurant, and Gyeongju Hyanggyo Social Education Center. There are courses in Chinese characters, gayageum, sijo singing, calligraphy, the four noble plants, modern literature, Chinese poetry, and Silla history."
