Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Seokguram Grotto for its serene Buddha statue and intricate sculptures, calling it a must-visit historical site. The peaceful forest walk to the grotto is a highlight, offering a tranquil experience. However, some find the journey involving multiple bus transfers inconvenient, and national holidays can lead to significant crowds and delays.

"Seokguram Grotto is an iconic 8th-century Buddhist hermitage and UNESCO World Heritage site located on the slopes of Mount Toham in Gyeongju, South Korea.

It is a masterpiece of Korean art and engineering from the Silla Kingdom, renowned for its perfectly proportioned granite sanctuary. The grotto houses a majestic and serene statue of the Buddha seated in a granite dome, surrounded by intricate bas-relief carvings of deities, bodhisattvas, and disciples.

Unlike natural caves, Seokguram was artificially constructed with a sophisticated ventilation system to protect its interior. It is celebrated as one of the finest examples of Buddhist sculpture in the world and represents the spiritual and artistic zenith of Korean classical culture."

"You have to take a winding, somewhat dangerous, bus 12 ride (especially in the rain) from Bulguksa up the mountain.

Then you have to walk a clay trail and climb some stairs. During our visit, there was heavy machinery doing trail remediation, probably to prevent a slide.

You then enter a small building to view the Buddha in the grotto behind glass. Photos are not permitted.

I imagine that in high season, your time in the grotto would be limited. We went on a rainy October weekday. No crowds, but 5 minutes was enough. We wanted to head down to catch the bus down."

"It is free. Parking for passenger cars is krw2000. You can actually walk down to bullkuksa and it is 2.2km. I bet that walk is amazing. The walk to Seokguram from the entrance os 600m. It probably takes 15min each way. I have seen people coming with baby strollers. Once you walk 600m, there are about 30 steps up to the grotto. It was one od the best buddha face, a mildest smile. A must to see. There is a huge bell you can ring for krw 1,000. Loved it."
