"After Korea’s liberation in 1945, this building served as the headquarters for the Ministry of Education and later the Ministry of Culture and Information, becoming the administrative center for national education and cultural policy in the early Republic of Korea.
When those offices moved to Sejong City, the site was reborn in 2012 as the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History.
This makes the museum’s location itself historically meaningful — it’s a place where the modern nation’s governance and cultural identity first took shape.
Inside, the exhibitions are well organized by period, from liberation to the present, making it an excellent introduction to modern Korean history — even for first-time visitors or foreigners.
Its surroundings also add to its significance: right across from Sejong Center and the Government Complex, and just behind it lies Gyeongbokgung Palace and Mt. Bukak. Together they form the symbolic axis of Korea’s politics and history.
One place you absolutely shouldn’t miss is the rooftop observatory on the 8th floor.
From there, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire Gyeongbokgung Palace, beautifully framed by the surrounding mountains.
It offers a perfect vantage point to appreciate the geomantic (Pungsu-jiri) harmony of the palace’s location — encircled by mountains that were believed to protect the king and ensure the dynasty’s stability.
