"Amazing experience. We got to try 5 different Korean liquors while learning about each distillery. I highly recommend it.
You do need to make the reservation on Naver and pay a 1000kwn deposit per person but it's refunded as soon as you check in.
The gallery is kinda in the back. You walk past the front desk and through some other exhibits that detail Korean food and drinks. All very informative and well put together."

"a fun and informative tasting! for free! and the building is really nice too. we didn't need a reservation but if you have more than one or two people i would recommend making one, or stopping by to put your name down for a later time

they have you fill out a form during the tasting to give feedback to the distilleries, which is really cool.

it's also a good place to stop by if you want some guidance on what to buy to bring home as souvenirs, gifts, etc."

"What a display of all different rice wine from different regions in South Korea. We eneded up buying several bottles and they packed it with ice so we could take it in cool temp. Great experience."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of Makgeolli and Soju

The Seoul Museum of Traditional Korean Alcohol Culture delves into the heart of Korea's beloved beverages: makgeolli and soju. Makgeolli, a milky, unrefined rice wine, boasts a history stretching back centuries and is known for its slightly sweet, tangy, and effervescent profile. Its production involves fermenting rice, and regional variations offer a spectrum of flavors, from light and crisp to rich and creamy. Reddit

Soju, on the other hand, is a distilled spirit, traditionally made from rice, though modern versions often use other starches like sweet potatoes or tapioca. While historically clear and potent, contemporary soju comes in a wide array of flavors and lower alcohol content, making it incredibly popular. The museum's exhibits and tastings provide a fascinating insight into the craftsmanship and cultural significance behind these iconic Korean drinks. Reddit

Visitors often express delight at the sheer variety available, with many discovering new favorites during their tasting sessions. The opportunity to learn about the brewing processes and the regional differences adds a layer of appreciation to each sip. Reddit

A Journey Through Korean Culinary Heritage

Beyond just alcohol, the museum offers a broader perspective on Korean food culture. The exhibition space thoughtfully connects the role of traditional beverages with the nation's culinary heritage. This includes insights into staple foods, fermentation techniques, and the social customs surrounding meals and drinks in Korea. Reddit

Exploring these exhibits before or after a tasting can significantly enhance your understanding of how alcohol has been integrated into Korean life, from celebratory feasts to everyday rituals. It’s a chance to appreciate the intricate relationship between food, drink, and culture. Reddit

Many visitors find this comprehensive approach particularly valuable, as it provides context and a deeper appreciation for the flavors and traditions they encounter. The museum serves as a gateway to understanding the broader tapestry of Korean gastronomy. Reddit
