"Getxo is used as a cruise port. You can travel to Bilbao from here. It's a nice enough port and has one of the few transporter bridges left in the world."

Joanna “GladysWelsh”

"It's a very nice, upmarket Basque city. Although the restaurants are not the cheapest, you can experience Basque gastronomy here. If you're driving, watch out for speed cameras!"

Alberto MAYNAR AGUILAR

"Stopped here as part of a cruise and couldn't be bothered to travel to Bilbao. Lovely walk from the cruise port along the sea wall followed by walking to town past the marina. Several beautiful mansions to admire along the way before arriving in town and the impressive transporter bridge. Couple of euros to cross or 10 euros to get the lift and walk across the top of the bridge and back, not for the faint hearted!!"

The Architectural Legacy of Neguri

The Neguri Mansions are a collection of opulent residences built primarily in the early 20th century, reflecting the wealth of Basque industrialists and merchants of the time. These homes are characterized by their diverse architectural styles, ranging from Art Nouveau and Neo-Gothic to Neoclassical and Modernist influences. Many feature grand facades, intricate detailing, spacious gardens, and a sense of historical grandeur that transports visitors back in time. Wandering through the tree-lined streets of Neguri offers a unique architectural tour, showcasing a period of significant economic prosperity in the region. Reddit

These mansions were designed to impress, with many boasting unique features like towers, ornate balconies, and large windows that capture the coastal light. The area itself, part of the municipality of Getxo, was developed as an exclusive residential district, attracting affluent families. While the interiors are largely private, the exteriors alone are a testament to the craftsmanship and artistic sensibilities of the era. The Vizcaya Bridge, a nearby UNESCO World Heritage site, also stands as a symbol of the industrial prowess and engineering innovation of the same period. Reddit

For visitors, exploring Neguri is about appreciating the visual splendor of these historic homes and imagining the lives of those who once inhabited them. It’s a peaceful escape that offers a different perspective on the Basque Country, moving beyond the bustling cityscapes to a more serene and architecturally rich environment. The proximity to the coast adds to the charm, with sea breezes and ocean views complementing the stately residences. Reddit

Experiencing the Vizcaya Bridge

The Vizcaya Bridge (Puente de Vizcaya) is an iconic transporter bridge and a UNESCO World Heritage site, located near the Neguri Mansions in Getxo. It's one of the few remaining bridges of its kind in the world, a remarkable feat of industrial engineering from the late 19th century. The bridge connects the towns of Portugalete and Getxo across the Nervión River estuary. Reddit

Visitors have a couple of options for experiencing the bridge. You can take the ferry gondola that shuttles passengers and vehicles across the river, offering a unique and practical way to traverse the estuary. For a more thrilling experience, you can ascend to the top walkway, which is accessible via lifts. Walking across the top provides breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding industrial landscape, the coastline, and the city of Bilbao. Crossing the Vizcaya Bridge is a must-do when visiting the Neguri area. It’s a tangible link to the region’s industrial past and offers a different perspective on the landscape compared to the residential grandeur of the mansions. The bridge itself is a marvel of engineering and a testament to the innovation of its time, making it a significant historical and architectural attraction. Reddit
