What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
This beautiful 16th-century church, rebuilt after damage, is a significant spiritual and historical site in Ayamonte. Visitors praise its stunning high altar, numerous chapels, and touching mother and child statues, often finding a peaceful and soulful atmosphere. However, inconsistent opening hours and a sometimes mandatory donation request have been noted as drawbacks.
"Sadly like so many churches, this one us often locked so we were delighted to find it open when we passed just by chance. If you can visit (usually open prior to mass and We are told most evenings about 6pm). It really is worth a visit, it's so beautiful, the chapels and statues along with the high alter are amazing."

"A big turn-off for us was the forced donation if you visit the church. While it is clearly written, donativo or donation in English, when I asked the elderly gentleman if it is obligatory, he said yes that we should pay 2 euros per person if we want to see the church. That was not a problem, but when I saw a group of 4 people that did not pay yet toured the church anyway, I was annoyed. I asked him why those people did not pay and he said that they meant to see a specific statue. So obviously, he is targeting tourists and this is not fair. The others were not locals, that's for sure.
He did light the main altar for us- maybe to assuage his conscience and played the Ave Maria. Apparently, Moon River was playing when our friend visited the church a week before. So yes, that's probably what you get for your 2 euros. The church has many statues and they look well-maintained. Of course, it pales in comparison to the cathedral in Sevilla. I just did not like that we were forced to pay a donation."

"A lovely church to visit in Ayamonte. Interestingly, you will see many beautiful mother and child statues all around the church…when we visited, soulful songs by Enya and Bocelli were being played and I enjoyed my time there."
