The site contains the remains of Barcelona’s old streets and buildings, which were destroyed during the War of the Spanish Succession in 1714. In 1876, the El Born Market was built here. After the market was closed in 1971, the site was abandoned until archaeological excavations uncovered the ruins of pre-1714 Barcelona. In 2013, to preserve these remains and honor Barcelona’s historical memory, the site was reopened as the Cultural and Memorial Center (CCM). The museum features permanent exhibitions on the Gothic Quarter, the El Born district, the War of the Spanish Succession, and Barcelona’s history of resistance.
