I arrived via bus around 1:30pm on a sunny weekday afternoon. I wanted to check out the beautiful art nouveau graves. Another thing that’d appealed to me was getting away from the bustling crowds… and just as I’d hoped, there was no one there. I saw 3 people during my 2ish hour visit. I was thankful for the peace at first, but when a sneaking disquiet started to set in, I understood what a previous reviewer had meant when she’d suggested not going alone.
Definitely worth it to read about the history of the place. In addition to being the final resting place of various famous figures, the cemetery had also been the site of mass unmarked graves during the years of Franco.
I recommend a visit. It was beautiful and sobering and gave me a deeper understanding of and respect for Barcelona’s history."
