"The Town Hall tower was built in the 16th century, although there was already another one in the same place, and before the church, which forced the symmetry of the apse to be modified. In the first body is the clock and a coat of arms of the city. The bells are rung to summon the councilors and to regulate the mowing in the reeds of the estuary. Next to the tower is the church of Santiago, a beautiful example of the Galician Romanesque-ogival style of the 15th century, ordered to be built by Fernán Pérez de Andrade o Bo, who left his coat of arms stones in various places in the temple as a memory. The main portal has four pairs of columns with Romanesque-style capitals, an image of Santiago on horseback and a Christ seated on the axis of the well-worked archivolts. They show the twelve apostles with other saints. Opposite the church of Santiago is an old manor house and the remains of the Tower of Lanzós, belonging to the Lanzós manor house, from 1621. The building offers a beautiful appearance. The monotony of the facade is broken by a curious balcony tribune and a door with a cracked pediment on which the coat of arms of the founder, Alonso de Lanzós Novoa y Andrade, Count of Maceda, is displayed. Through the arch of the Ponte Vella, which after the 20th century reforms has lost almost all of its medieval appearance, you can go out to the Ribeira. There is, on the right, a small pier and next to it are the walls of the Convento das Angustias Recoletas. Going up the arcades of the Fonte de Unta, we reach the current center of Betanzos, which is the square of the García Naveira Brothers, benefactors of Betanzos. “O Campo” is also adorned with a beautiful cast-iron fountain made in a Parisian foundry in 1866, which imitates the Diana fountain of Versailles. We end up in the Plaza de la Constitución by entering through the Porta da Vila, which only retains the name and three coats of arms that were embedded in the first house on Rúa do Castro. Before entering the square, we see on the left the old Bendaña manor house, with Gothic elements (15th century) and Baroque remodeling (18th century). On the right, the houses with arcades are the remains of the place where the Andrade manor house and the prison used to be. The square is dominated by the noble building of the City Council, the manor house of the Counts of Taboada, the building that was to be used as the Archives of the Kingdom of Galicia in 1761, also known as the Lyceum and, in a corner, the graceful little house where the Municipal Library is located, which was originally (18th century) a school for orphans and is reproduced in the Barcelona exhibition."

The Gothic Heritage of Betanzos

Betanzos proudly holds the title of 'capital of Gothic' in Galicia, a testament to its rich architectural legacy. Declared a historic-artistic center in 1970, the town boasts a remarkably well-preserved medieval core. As you wander through its streets, you'll encounter numerous examples of Gothic architecture, from the imposing Church of Santiago to the charming arcades that define many of its squares and thoroughfares. This architectural style, characterized by pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses, creates a unique and atmospheric ambiance that transports visitors back in time. Instagram

The Torre Municipal, or Clock Tower, while dating from the 16th century, stands as a prominent landmark within this historic setting. Its hexagonal design and integration with the Church of Santiago highlight the town's architectural evolution. The Church of Santiago itself is a masterpiece of the Galician Romanesque-ogival style, dating from the 15th century. Its main portal, adorned with columns, Romanesque-style capitals, and a depiction of Santiago on horseback, is a focal point for admiration. The presence of coats of arms from Fernán Pérez de Andrade o Bo, who commissioned the church, adds a layer of historical narrative to the structure. Reddit

Beyond these major landmarks, the entire historic center is a treasure trove of architectural details. The Plaza de la Constitución, with its elegant cast-iron fountain reminiscent of Versailles, is surrounded by noble buildings that tell stories of Betanzos' past. The Culinary Icon: Tortilla de Betanzos

Betanzos is not just a feast for the eyes but also for the palate, primarily due to its iconic 'tortilla de Betanzos.' This is not your average Spanish omelet; it's a dish that sparks debate and delights many. The defining characteristic of the Betanzos tortilla is its intentionally undercooked, almost runny, center, achieved through a specific cooking technique. This creates a creamy, luscious texture that sets it apart from firmer tortillas found elsewhere in Spain. TikTok

Bar Galicia is frequently cited as the place to go for the quintessential Betanzos tortilla, having won awards for its rendition. However, the charm of Betanzos lies in exploring its numerous local bars and restaurants, each offering their own interpretation of this beloved dish. Trying different versions allows you to appreciate the subtle variations and find your personal favorite. It's a culinary experience that is deeply ingrained in the local identity and a must-try for any visitor. TikTok

When ordering, be prepared for the distinct texture. Some find it revolutionary, while others may prefer a more traditional, set tortilla. Regardless of your preference, experiencing the 'tortilla de Betanzos' is an essential part of understanding the town's gastronomic culture. Pair it with a local wine or a refreshing drink for a truly authentic Galician culinary adventure. Reddit
