Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Caldera de Gairía for its unique volcanic landscape and the rewarding hike, offering a different perspective on Fuerteventura. While the crater itself might be slightly underwhelming for some, the geological spectacle and panoramic views are consistently highlighted as major draws. Some caution is advised regarding the loose terrain and potential nesting season closures.

"This was a stunning little trip, even in the heat - we mis-timed and hiked between 11:30-13:00. It’s pretty breezy, so make sure your hat is secure, but it also helps keep the temperature more manageable.

You can see on my photos that we parked to the West and followed a well-defined path around to the South before climbing up. The ascent itself is then much steeper, and quite loose underfoot. Going up was easy enough, but coming down took more care. To put this in perspective, I hike a lot in the Peak District UK, and I managed this trip in trainers with my wife and two children aged 8 and 11. That’s not to say it isn’t dangerous or for the faint-hearted, make you own mind up with regard to the risks, but the view and geology is spectacular. 3 out if the 4 of us did slip on the way down, but nothing worse than dusty backsides or a slight graze.

The crater itself is a little underwhelming (not really sure what I expected) but still worth a short climb. After all, how often can you say you’ve climbed a volcano?

As others have said, pay attention to when the trail is open regarding nesting season; the sign is not until you’ve walked a distance from the car, where the western trail meets another from the South.

Distance is short, about 1.5km, with about 650 ft elevation."
