Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Ermita de San Salvador for its breathtaking panoramic views of Calpe and the Mediterranean, making the climb well worth the effort. The historic chapel and its surrounding park, complete with amenities for relaxation, add to the charm. Some note that the interior may be closed and sea views can be partially obscured by trees.

"A very pleasant chapel set on a hill overlooking the town and sea"

Keith Dipper

"This Hermitage of San Salvador is very beautiful, located in the Hermitage Park. It can be accessed from two points off the nearby Avenida de Masnou, next to the southwest side of Calpe's old town. One of these accesses is El Calvario.
It is a single-nave building with a rectangular floor plan. The interior is divided into three sections by two pointed arches resting on stone pilasters that extend into buttresses toward the exterior of the facades.
According to maps, this hermitage was documented in its current location in 1745. The old Calvary was destroyed during the Civil War. It was restored in 1945, and since then, worship has resumed in the hermitage, hosting religious services, especially every August 6th, the Feast of San Salvador, when it opens its doors for the celebration. The current Calvary dates back to 1993.
This hermitage has witnessed centuries of traditions, such as the oil lamp that sailors lit on its façade to guide boats seeking refuge. This gesture explains the presence of the olive tree, a source of oil, which still stands at the entrance today, a reminder of its seafaring past.
And from this hermitage, we can also enjoy beautiful views of Calpe, including the mountains on one side, as well as the town center, the Mediterranean Sea, and the impressive Peñón de Ifach.
A visit to this Hermitage of San Salvador and its park is highly recommended, not to mention the beautiful old town, which will amaze you, as well as its beautiful beaches and the spectacular Peñón de Ifach."

José Antonio Sebastián García

"A beautiful chapel, but with many stairs, the sea views are limited by the pine trees. There are tables and a fountain for spending time in the shade."
