"If you'd like to learn more, continue reading: Human settlements in this area have occurred since ancient times, given its location in the Guadalquivir Valley. Bell-shaped vases have been found, preserved in the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid, and date back to the late Neolithic, specifically the Chalcolithic, period. It was colonized by the Phoenicians and Carthaginians, and became a Roman city of great importance, as evidenced by the walls and gates, modified during the Almohad period and later in the 18th century (the gates of Seville and Córdoba), and especially the necropolis outside the city, which contained no fewer than 800 tombs, some of which resemble a Roman villa.
In 884, Carmona served as a refuge for Sevillians fleeing the Normans. In 895, this city was conquered by Al-Mudaffar. After five centuries of Muslim history, Carmona was reconquered by Ferdinand III the Saint in 1247. Carmona suffered a siege from its neighbor Seville until it was incorporated into his kingdom in 1502.
The ancient city of Carmona, located on a high plateau overlooking the fertile plain of the Guadalquivir River, is completely surrounded by walls for 3 kilometers. The walled enclosure is of Roman origin, a testament to the city's importance, and has undergone medieval, Islamic, and Christian modifications. In Roman times, Carmona had four gates, which allowed the walled city to communicate with the outside world. Of these, only two remain today, the Seville Gate and the Córdoba Gate, due to the numerous decisive battles that have taken place throughout history. The Seville Gate was renovated by the Arabs on its exterior, and the Córdoba Gate was transformed in the modern era. In Roman urban planning, these two main gates were connected by the Cardo Maximus, forming the city's main thoroughfare. This layout, allowing access to the city through both gates and their interconnection, remains almost unchanged today.
