The most striking building in Castaño del Robledo is undoubtedly "The Monument" or "The Unfinished Church" or "The Cemetery Church" or "The Cathedral of the Sierra" as I usually call it. What a temple worthy of a city looks like in a town of barely 200 inhabitants! It's only logical that legends arise around this seemingly inexplicable construction. One story tells that the Jesuits, anticipating the flight from the city, decided to set up an alternative refuge, as Arias Montano had done in his time at Peña de Alájar, only this time on a grand scale. But the Jesuits were expelled from Spain and the work was left half-finished. Another story tells that the architect was shot by the French during the Napoleonic occupation, while still another speaks of his suicide, obviously by jumping from the tower for unclear reasons, but with the same result: the work was not completed."

"A rather curious building, even though its construction was late. It dates back to the 18th century and is unfinished, although there is no information as to why. The façade is unusual, and it seems there are also elements that were never finished. The interior was closed at the time of our visit, but it seems almost more interesting than the exterior. It has a metal dome, which appears to have been added some time later."

"I really liked it. It's striking that in such a small town they would attempt to build such a huge structure, something that could have been but wasn't. Today it's used for cultural activities, exhibitions, and so on. I highly recommend visiting it, as well as the entire town, street by street. Aside from driving, it's nice to reach Castaño using some of the hiking trails that lead from neighboring towns like Fuenteheridos, Galaroza, Alabar, and Jabujo. Best regards."
