Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Fort of Hacho for its spectacular panoramic views of Ceuta and the Strait of Gibraltar, alongside its impressive 18th-century military architecture. The historical significance, particularly its past as a prison, adds a compelling dimension. Some note that prior email booking is essential and can require planning.

"Impressive fortress at the highest point in Ceuta. The entire Historic Monumental Complex has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC).
Although all civilizations that occupied Ceuta since ancient times fortified these elevations (204 meters above sea level), the current configuration dates back to successive projects planned in the 18th century by Lieutenant General Juan Caballero y Arigorri (1713-1797) of the Corps of Engineers, who designed a perimeter that protects the more than 10 hectares of the summit of Hacho, the highest point in Ceuta.
It has five bastions and five gates, as well as 40 towers. The perimeter is over a kilometer and a half long and, in some sections, 26 meters high. All of this was adapted to defend against the artillery power achieved by 18th-century military technology.
From 1814 to 1979, it served as a prison. First, it was a General Prison, although it predominantly served political prisoners. Since 1910, it has been a military prison.
The conditions for the inmates were very harsh, leading to frequent riots. One of these was quelled by the heroine of the Sieges of Zaragoza, Agustina de Aragón, who lived in Ceuta and was respected by the prisoners. One of the courtyards is named in her honor, where, according to tradition, she successfully harangued the inmates to calm them down.
The interior of the barracks preserves renovated cells, water tanks, and prison staff quarters. It can be visited free of charge upon request by email.
The views of the city of Ceuta and the Strait of Gibraltar are spectacular."

"During the Civil War and the Francoist Dictatorship, it served as a detention center for political prisoners and victims of Francoist repression."

"The current walled enclosure dates from the 18th century. It is shaped like an irregular hexagon, with an approximate perimeter of 1,550 meters and an area of 108,291 square meters. It is composed of a series of wall sections punctuated by 40 semicircular towers and reinforced by five bastions at each of the convex vertices of the hexagon.
In some sections, the walls are up to 26 meters high.
The five bastions are:
- Málaga Gate Bastion.
- Covered Fountain Bastion.
- San Antonio Bastion.
- San Amaro Bastion.
- Tenaza and its Cake Bastion."
