"These houses look like they were built after someone said what if gravity is optional. The Casas Colgadas cling to the edge of the Huécar gorge and have been terrifying visitors since at least the 14th century. Once common medieval homes this handful survived while the rest wisely disappeared leaving Cuenca with its most iconic architectural flex.
They hang directly over a sheer drop which was both defensive and extremely bold urban planning. Living here meant fresh air dramatic views and constant awareness that stonework really matters. Over the centuries they have served as private homes storage and now a museum and restaurant because nothing pairs with history like dining next to a cliff.
Cuenca earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1996 largely because of this improbable skyline suspended between two gorges the Júcar and the Huécar. From the hanging balconies you can see the gorge below and question every life choice that led people to build here without railings or fear.
Today they are beautifully restored photographed endlessly and still mildly unsettling in the best way. Come for the architecture stay for the disbelief leave with great photos and a deep respect for medieval builders who trusted stone wood and vibes over safety codes."

"Cuenca is one of the best cities we visited during the off-season, and we definitely recommend going there, as it has the best atmosphere we experienced among Spain’s ancient cities for tourists. We absolutely loved the hanging houses and the entire old town with its varying levels and the impressive fortifications that once made it almost impregnable. It’s incredibly beautiful, and if you climb higher, you get a stunning view of the entire city, both old and new, as well as the monasteries. The impressions were simply magical. We were lucky with the weather: the first day was rainy, which added a special atmosphere to the old town, making everything come alive, and then the next two days were sunny and warm, very welcoming. We also visited the Dinosaur Museum, which our son still fondly remembers. It was a truly wonderful experience!"
