Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Ermita del Calvario a charming and historically significant site, particularly appreciating its picturesque location and the spiritual journey up the Stations of the Cross. However, its extremely limited opening hours are a frequent point of frustration, often preventing many from seeing the interior.
".
This attractive little chapel is near the Parque del Calvario.
The easiest way to get to it is up the tree-lined road directly next to the right-hand edge of the park. It's certainly going UP, by the way - it's a steepish hill . . .
It's called the Calle Fuente de María Gil, and you will notice on the left-hand side of the street some small white pillars, about the size and shape of an old-fashioned pillarbox. These are the Stations of the Cross for when pilgrims come up here en route to the chapel.
The building that you see now is not the original. That was built in the early years of the 19th century, but was, sadly, destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. Re-built at the end of the war, it was renovated early this century. It is kept locked, but you can peer through the iron grille to see the inside.
It is believed that the original structure was used to house lepers and others with frightening diseases, as it was at that time well outside the town, only becoming a religious building some 50 years after its construction.

"📍 18th-century chapel.
Built on the remains of a parish church, it is now one of the town's most famous places of worship.
It is open on Fridays from 10:00 to 11:00 and is staffed by two friendly sisters who are responsible for opening and closing the chapel, as well as maintaining the building.
Inside, there are various religious images, such as a crucified Christ and a statue of Saint Pancras, as well as a multitude of floral offerings."

"The exact date of this hermitage's construction is unknown, although it is highly likely that it was built after 1800. It is known to have existed as early as 1829.
When Estepona expanded towards the east, the lepers and plague victims who lived in shacks on the outskirts of the town were moved to a location with more humane conditions and sufficiently far from the population to avoid contagion. After 1875, this place began to be used as a sacred place where local residents came to pray.
The Hermitage of Calvary is a small 18th-century building with a square floor plan and a groin vault. The exterior is very simple. The tower of the old parish church is the only remaining remnant of the original parish church and is set, in a peculiar way, among the houses. Technicians date its construction to 1818, when important squares and the octagonal bell tower were built, also topping it with an octagonal dome."
