Reviews Summary

Formentera is widely praised for its stunning, Caribbean-like beaches with crystal-clear turquoise waters and soft white sand, offering a serene escape. Visitors love the relaxed vibe, the ability to explore by scooter or bike, and the delicious seafood. However, some find it overcrowded and expensive, with limited public transport and crowded beaches during peak season.

"My recent trip to Formentera with friends was absolutely incredible! We had such a good time exploring the island, and it truly lived up to its reputation as a stunning Mediterranean gem.
One of the highlights of our trip was definitely renting a boat. It gave us the freedom to discover secluded coves and pristine waters that would have been otherwise inaccessible. Cruising around the island, feeling the sun on our skin and the sea spray, was an experience we won't soon forget.
A particular standout was when we stopped by a fantastic restaurant on Isla de SA Platgeta (often known for its proximity to Illetes beach).
The food was delicious, and the setting was just perfect – a wonderful break from our boating adventure.
Formentera offers the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, especially when shared with good company. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a memorable escape with friends!"

"If you are looking for some paradise island in Europe, this is one of those places. Absolutely worth visiting, walking or running on the beach, cycling, swimming... I could go on and on. You simply have to come here and surrender to the beauty of this place and believe me, many of your memories will remain."

Lucca T.

"Don’t believe the hype, it is not worth the effort. Whilst it is true that the beaches are beautiful they are also small and overcrowded. People lying side by side with a few centimeters of space. There are much nicer and less crowded beaches in other parts of Spain. The few bars and restaurants are small, crowded and expensive. The so called nature reserve is full of mainly dead plants and the major wildlife are people on scooters, quads and bikes."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Exploring Formentera's Beaches

Formentera is synonymous with its breathtaking beaches, often compared to Caribbean paradises. Ses Illetes is arguably the most famous, a narrow strip of sand with impossibly clear, shallow turquoise waters, making it ideal for wading and swimming. It's part of a protected natural park, contributing to its pristine condition. However, its popularity means it can get very crowded, especially during peak season. TikTokInstagram

Other must-visit beaches include Cala Saona, a picturesque cove framed by red cliffs, offering calm waters perfect for a relaxed swim. Playa de Migjorn is the island's longest beach, stretching for several kilometers and offering a more laid-back vibe with several beach bars. Es Arenals is another beautiful stretch of sand known for its fine grains and clear waters. Remember to pack reef-safe sunscreen to help preserve these delicate ecosystems. TikTokInstagram

When visiting Formentera's beaches, consider renting a scooter or bicycle to easily hop between them. This allows you to discover hidden coves and enjoy the freedom of exploring at your own pace. Be aware that some beaches, like Ses Illetes, may have parking fees or restrictions, so arriving early or using alternative transport is often best. TikTok

Getting Around Formentera: Freedom on Two Wheels

The best way to experience the charm and accessibility of Formentera is by renting a scooter or a bicycle. This mode of transport allows you to navigate the island's relatively flat terrain with ease, reaching secluded beaches and picturesque viewpoints that might be inaccessible by car or public transport. Many rental shops are available in La Savina, the main port, and in towns like Sant Francesc Xavier. TikTok

Scooters offer a good balance of speed and maneuverability, perfect for covering more ground. Bicycles are a more eco-friendly option and allow for a slower, more immersive experience of the island's natural beauty. Both are popular choices, so booking in advance, especially during the high season, is highly recommended to secure your preferred vehicle and potentially a better rate. Instagram

While taxis are available and can be a convenient option for shorter distances or when you prefer not to drive, they are generally more expensive than renting a scooter for a full day. Formentera's roads are generally well-maintained, but always ride responsibly and wear a helmet. Reddit

Formentera's Culinary Scene: From Beach Bites to Fine Dining

Formentera offers a delightful culinary journey, from casual beachside chiringuitos to sophisticated restaurants. The island's cuisine emphasizes fresh, local ingredients, with a strong focus on seafood. Beso Beach is a popular spot known for its lively atmosphere and Mediterranean dishes, often enjoyed with your feet in the sand. For a more upscale experience, Juan y Andrea and Es Moli de Sal at Ses Illetes offer exquisite seafood and stunning views. TikTokInstagram

Beyond the famous beach clubs, explore the charming towns like Sant Francesc Xavier for local eateries serving traditional Balearic fare. Look for dishes featuring fresh fish, paella, and local vegetables. Many restaurants are adapting to dietary needs, so inquiring about vegetarian and vegan options is usually fruitful. Instagram

Be prepared for Formentera's dining scene to be on the pricier side, reflecting its exclusive island status. However, the quality of food, the stunning settings, and the overall experience often justify the cost for many visitors. Enjoying a sunset cocktail or a leisurely lunch with a sea view is an integral part of the Formentera experience. Reddit
