What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Santa Maria de Mijaran Ruins historically significant as the oldest temple in the Aran Valley, appreciating its Romanesque origins. However, many express disappointment with the adjacent modern church and development, feeling it detracts from the ancient site's authenticity and historical integrity. The preservation of the Christ figure fragment in Vielha is noted as a positive connection to the past.
"I discovered the place more than 30 years ago; it was in ruins and was beautiful and authentic. What a disappointment this summer to find it restored (well), but with a monstrosity of a church right next to it (1 meter). Horribly constructed.
They could have stayed quiet; they'd put that on another piece of land and left the monastery alone."
Marta Perez
"It's a real shame that the decision wasn't made to rebuild this church, not even in more recent times when the valley has been swelled with money from real estate speculation. It was a monastery, destroyed several times, and a church of great historical importance to the valley (both politically and religiously). The only fragment of its famous Christ figure is preserved in the main church of Vielha. The façade, now gone, faced Vielha, right up against the wall of the new church. As if not rebuilding it wasn't enough, they built an eyesore of a modern church next to it, along with modern housing and an industrial park, all uglier than the last.
A real shame. And so the valley continues to trade its past for money."
Manué Salao
"At the back of the new church, we saw the ruins, or what remains, of the old hermitage. The contrast between one and the other is tremendous. Little remains, as the photos show."
