Visitors consistently praise Cueva del Viento for its fascinating geological insights and the passion of its guides. The unique experience of complete darkness is a standout highlight. While some tours might not venture extremely deep, the in-depth explanations and well-organized nature of the visit make it highly recommended. "An excellent and fascinating experience
We had a fantastic day out at the Cave of the Winds. The tour was incredibly interesting, and our guide, Francisco, was exceptionally knowledgeable and passionate about the geology and history of the caves. There’s free parking at the visitor centre, which made things easy, and the tour itself lasted around 2.5 hours – with over an hour spent exploring the tunnels. I’m surprised to see any negative reviews, as our experience was exactly as described on the website – informative, well-organised, and thoroughly enjoyable. Highly recommended if you're in Tenerife! Be sure to buy your tickets well in advance."

Noel Williams

"Excellent tour and impressive lava tubes! Our tour guide was the best I have met in a while. He gave detailed explanations in creative ways und even interacted with the 2 kids in our group to make it more interesting and fun for them. The information he gave ranged from easy to follow to very detailed and scientific. Tip: Ask questions and he will give you interesting answers! :)

Some reviews say that the tour is 'lengthy and stretched'. Well, if you want the mass tourism program, where you run through the site in 30 minutes, this is not for you. However, if you like a tour led by enthusiastic professionals with great insights of lava tubes and their exploration, I absolutely recommend it (for every age)!

Note: Book early. We got a slot a few days in advance, but it was the last ones."

"Really loved it!!
We’ve visited several caves around the world, for us this was a new experience. Our guide Mary gave very inters details on the way the caves were formed and showed a lot of nice things inside. The complete darkness when we turned off all lights was an experience in itself. We were very happy to be part of category 2. Visit the caves and you’ll discover what that means."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Geology of Cueva del Viento

Cueva del Viento, meaning 'Cave of the Wind,' is a spectacular volcanic tube system on the island of Tenerife. It was formed approximately 27,000 years ago during the first eruptive phase of the Pico Viejo volcano. As the lava flowed, the surface began to cool and solidify, creating a crust. The molten lava continued to flow underneath this crust, eventually draining out and leaving behind an extensive network of tunnels. This process is what makes it a lava tube. Instagram+1

With over 17 kilometers mapped to date, Cueva del Viento is recognized as the fifth longest volcanic tube in the world. Its complex structure features multiple levels and branches, creating a fascinating labyrinth for explorers. The unique geological formations within the cave are a testament to the powerful volcanic forces that shaped Tenerife. Instagram+1

During your tour, guides will explain the formation processes in detail, pointing out features like lava stalactites, lava stalagmites, and various flow patterns. Understanding this geological history adds a profound layer of appreciation to the experience, transforming a simple cave visit into an educational journey into Earth's fiery past. TikTokReddit

Navigating the Lava Tubes: Tour Experience

Visiting Cueva del Viento involves a guided tour, which is essential for safety and understanding the significance of the site. The tours are designed to be immersive and educational, lasting around 2.5 hours in total, with a substantial portion spent inside the lava tubes. Guides are passionate about the geology and history of the caves, often sharing detailed explanations and engaging stories. Reddit

One of the most memorable aspects of the tour is the 'complete darkness' experience. At a designated point, all lights are turned off, allowing visitors to truly feel the profound silence and absolute blackness of the underground environment. This moment offers a unique sensory experience and a chance to reflect on the vastness of the cave. Reddit

While the tours are thorough, some visitors note that they don't venture extremely far into the cave system, focusing on the most accessible and informative sections. However, the emphasis is on quality over quantity, with guides providing in-depth insights rather than a rushed walkthrough. This approach ensures a rich and memorable experience for all participants. TikTokReddit
