What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Sanctuary for its impressive collection of El Greco paintings and its rich historical significance, often noting the friendly staff and affordability. However, a significant drawback is the inconsistent opening hours, with some visitors experiencing unexpected closures that detract from their experience.

"Magnificent collection of El Greco paintings in this La Mancha town, well worth a visit"
Pablo García.
"It is shameful that a place with such an important historical-artistic heritage is in the hands of a Foundation that functions so poorly. They close without warning and refuse to open when they feel like it. We visited the place during the hours it is supposedly open and only found a sign with a telephone. When we called they told us that this weekend is a fair day in the square in front of the church and that they are there and are not going to open. We go to see their place at the supposed fair and there is no one there, it is the only empty place at the fair.
A place with such important paintings and run by idiots.
Even the customers who passed by told us that it was a real shame that they did not deign to open the door to us, but that it was very common for these people.
Then they complain when the paintings are taken to museums, where at least there is a reasonable schedule where they can be viewed by everyone without having to depend on the whim of the altar boy's son on duty."

The Artistic Legacy of El Greco
El Greco, born in Crete and later working in Italy and Spain, developed a distinctive style that bridged Mannerism and Baroque. His works in Illescas are particularly important for understanding his artistic evolution and his profound impact on Spanish art. The guided tours are invaluable here, as guides often provide context about El Greco's life, his techniques, and the specific historical circumstances surrounding the creation of these paintings. This deeper understanding truly elevates the viewing experience, transforming a simple admiration of art into an appreciation of its historical and cultural significance.
When visiting, take your time to absorb the details of each painting. Notice the expressive faces, the flowing drapery, and the celestial light that seems to emanate from within the canvases. The Sanctuary's commitment to preserving these works ensures that future generations can continue to be inspired by El Greco's genius. It's a testament to the enduring power of art and faith when brought together in such a sacred space.
Navigating Potential Closure Issues
This inconsistency has led to disappointment and frustration, with some visitors expressing that a place with such significant heritage should have more reliable access. The advice from those who have experienced this is clear: always call ahead to confirm the opening hours on the day of your intended visit. It's also worth inquiring if there are any local events or holidays that might affect access. While the art and history are highly praised, the operational management seems to be a point of contention for some, underscoring the need for diligent planning on the visitor's part.
Despite these potential challenges, many visitors still find the experience rewarding once they gain entry. The key takeaway is to approach your visit with flexibility and a proactive attitude towards confirming details. If you do manage to visit during open hours, the friendly staff and the wealth of art and history are generally well worth the effort.
