What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Church of La Magdalena for its unique historical significance, particularly its origins as a mosque with a preserved minaret and ablution courtyard. The charming atmosphere and views of Santa Catalina Castle are also frequently highlighted. Some visitors note that information on climbing the tower is limited.
"After the Arab baths and a quick look at the central courtyard of the palace we walked to the Church of Mary Magdalene to see the original Moorish ablutions bath there as the church was built on the site of the mosque and retained some Moorish colonnades too. The tower was originally the minaret but not sure if it is possible to climb it. The church is the oldest in the city and when we visited there was a mannequin (not sure of that's the right word) that is carried around the town during Holy Week."

"Another of Jaén's historic churches. Built on the site of an old mosque, it boasts a valuable heritage. Its courtyard with its central pool is very charming."
Miguel Angel Palacio Carabias
"It is one of the most charming and traditional churches in Jaén. It houses the figures of Christ of Medinaceli and Saint Rita, with a bell tower that was the old minaret of the Mosque on which the church was built.
Attached to it is a courtyard with a spectacular rectangular fountain, believed to have belonged to the Mosque. It is always immaculate and spotless, as the parishioners are responsible for its care and maintenance.
Weather permitting, one of the most famous processions in Jaén City during Holy Week departs from it."
