Reviews Summary

Visitors find Santimamiñe Cave to be a historically significant site with impressive prehistoric art, though direct access to the original paintings is restricted for preservation. The guided tours are informative, and the 3D representation offers a good alternative. The surrounding natural beauty is also a highlight.

"We read online that you can only go part way into the cave but now it's completely closed off at the entrance. I guess they have a virtual visit and maybe a fake cave that's open for children but we didn't check it out. I wish it said this on the website. Was still an ok walk to the top just to see the entrance I suppose."

Eric Rising

"It's a world heritage and quite impressive. Since 2006 they dont allow people to go deep into the cave however they have a 3D representation on site. You have to have a reservation before going as the guided tours (and there is no tour without a guide) are taking place with only reservation.
It has a webpage you can see the timing from there. The prices are 5€ for adults and 3€ for under 26, student, kids.
Enjoy.. and dont forget to visit Bosque del Omo after here."

Hüseyin Taş

"We booked in advance for the English guide so we could get in the cave. Guide Javi is super knowledgeable and I think it is really great and totally worth the prize. guide itself is 90 minutes."

Deep Dives

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of the Magdalenian Period

Santimamiñe Cave is a treasure trove of Paleolithic art, primarily from the Magdalenian period (roughly 17,000 to 12,000 years ago). The cave walls are adorned with nearly fifty prehistoric paintings depicting animals like bison, horses, and deer. These artworks offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives, beliefs, and artistic capabilities of our ancient ancestors. The use of natural pigments like ochre and charcoal, applied with remarkable skill, has allowed these images to endure for millennia. Instagram+1

While the original paintings are now protected and inaccessible to the public, the cave's significance as a UNESCO World Heritage site remains. The on-site 3D representation aims to recreate the experience of viewing these ancient masterpieces, allowing visitors to appreciate their beauty and historical context. This technology provides an immersive understanding of the cave's artistic heritage, bridging the gap between the past and the present. Reddit

Understanding the context of these paintings is key to appreciating their value. They likely served purposes beyond mere decoration, possibly related to hunting rituals, shamanistic practices, or storytelling. The detailed depictions of animals suggest a deep connection and understanding of the natural world by the Magdalenian people. Instagram

Preservation and Visitor Experience

The decision to restrict deep access into Santimamiñe Cave stems from a critical need for preservation. Years of visitor traffic, even with good intentions, can lead to degradation of the delicate cave environment and the ancient artwork. Factors like changes in humidity, temperature, and even the CO2 exhaled by visitors can have detrimental effects. Reddit

To balance preservation with public access, the site now offers a guided tour experience that focuses on education and appreciation without direct contact with the most sensitive areas. The tour includes an informative walk to the cave entrance and an engaging presentation of the 3D representation of the cave's interior. This approach ensures that the cave's heritage is protected for future generations while still providing a meaningful and educational visit for contemporary travelers. Reddit

Travelers often express a mix of understanding and slight disappointment about the limited access. However, the consensus is that the guided tour, the knowledgeable guides, and the surrounding natural beauty make the visit worthwhile. The €5 entry fee is considered a fair price for the experience and the contribution to conservation efforts. Reddit
