Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Medieval Walls of León to be a charming historical element woven into the city's fabric, offering glimpses into Roman and medieval pasts. While not as grand as some other fortified cities, their integration with modern life and accessibility are appreciated. Some note they are not the city's most striking feature but add to its overall character.
"The city has several areas where you can see parts of the wall. It's not the most striking feature of Leon, but it's one of its many charms."
C. R Paraje de Yuste
"The wall of León is the Roman fortification of the Spanish city of León that delimits the old town.
The walled complex of León is made up of the Roman wall, dating back to the 1st century, the medieval walls or fences, from the 14th century, and the castle of León, today the site of the provincial historical archive. The walls were built by Legio VI to control the Asturian population in the area and rebuilt in stone by Legio VII in 74 AD. The first major renovation took place during the Tetarchic period, still under Roman rule.
The repopulation of the city in the 9th century by the Kingdom of Asturias led to the repair of the wall using the methods of the time. The first extension, on land, to the south of the city was carried out due to the increase in hamlets outside the walls, something that ultimately also led Alfonso XI to order the construction of the fences to protect the new town."
