"Not a great deal here in truth, but the small exhibit is interesting and the mosaic is well preserved"

Tom (Bozz)

"If you like Roman history this is definitely worth a visit.
The staff here is very friendly.
The entrance is free.
Only 3 procent of this Roman Town has been excavated, it would be very interesting to see what more is laying just under the surface.
This town had a population of 10.000 people about 2.000 years ago.
Unfortunately the finds from this town is not to see here, but in a museum in Linares. I think its a shame and that it should be here in Castulo"

My Løiborg Palmqvist

"Cástulo is amazing. If only they had the budget to keep discovering the ancient remains, such as the beautiful "Mosaic of loves", this could be as well known as other Roman cities such as Merida or Itálica. Very commended for archeology and history fans. Beautiful landscapes all around too."

The Unexcavated Potential of Cástulo

Cástulo is a testament to the vastness of Roman urban life, with an astonishing 97% of the ancient city still buried beneath the earth. This means that what visitors see today is just a fraction of its former glory. The scale of the excavated area hints at a once-thriving population of around 10,000 people, making it a significant Roman center. The ongoing archaeological work, though limited by budget, promises future discoveries that could further illuminate its history. Reddit

This limited excavation is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it means the site offers a unique perspective on the potential of Roman settlements, allowing visitors to imagine the full extent of the city. On the other hand, it's a point of regret for many, who wish more of this incredible history could be brought to light and displayed on-site. The finds from Cástulo are primarily housed in the museum in Linares, a fact that some visitors feel detracts from the experience of the archaeological site itself. Reddit

Despite the unexcavated portions, the existing ruins and the interpretation center provide a compelling narrative. The 'Mosaic of Loves' is a particularly exquisite example of the artistry that once adorned Cástulo's homes and public buildings. Exploring the site allows for a tangible connection to the past, offering a glimpse into the daily lives and architectural sophistication of Roman Iberia.

Navigating Cástulo: Practicalities and Perspectives

Visiting Cástulo is a straightforward experience, largely due to its free admission. This accessibility is a major draw for history enthusiasts and budget travelers alike. The site is equipped with an interpretation center that serves as a crucial starting point, offering context and information about the ruins you're about to explore. Parking is available, which is convenient for those arriving by car. Reddit

However, travelers should be aware of the access road. While paved, the final stretch leading to the site can be narrow, requiring careful driving, especially for larger vehicles. This is a common point of mention among visitors, highlighting the need for cautious navigation. Comfortable footwear is also a must, as the archaeological site involves walking over uneven terrain. Reddit

Many visitors highlight the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, particularly security guards, who often go out of their way to enhance the visitor experience. This personal touch can significantly enrich a visit, turning a simple exploration into a memorable encounter. While the site itself might not have extensive amenities, the warmth of the people and the historical significance of the location make it a worthwhile destination.
