"15th-16th centuries. Under the authority of the Council of Lorca, the settlement "Casas de los Alumbres de Almazarrón" was gradually organized, where the Castle of Los Vélez and the Fortress of the Marquis of Villena were built.
Both lordships settled in the area beginning in the second half of the 15th century, when Henry IV granted the privilege of exploiting the alum mines to both marquisates.
The castle has an irregular layout, occupying an area of just over 3,000 m², and can be divided into two distinct areas: the fortress itself and the parade ground. Its walls are one meter thick and rest directly on the bedrock. Of the castle's original internal structure, it is known—according to written accounts by González Simancas, who visited the castle in 1903—that it retained remains of various rooms, paving, doorways with carved limestone lintels, decorations made with red stucco, decorative elements, steps, underground structures, and other details that have now disappeared or are hidden beneath the earthworks of an old mine, opened within the castle.
