Visitors consistently praise San Pedro Church for its unique and impressive Needle Tower, a striking Gothic landmark. The Romanesque cloister and the detailed Gothic portal are also highlighted as significant architectural draws. "Very unusual tower!"

"Great priest. Great Mass"

Nes Rotstein

"In the southeast corner of the old walled enclosure of the so-called "co de fuera" (outer wall), replacing an earlier building called San Felices, the current church was built, donated in 1093 by Sancho Ramírez to the abbot of Montearagón. Since this abbey-fortress owned fourteen other churches in the Kingdom of Pamplona, the vicar of San Pedro acted as the monastery's lieutenant over all of them, including the churches of Santa María, San Bartolomé, and San Miguel within Olite itself. It achieved the status of parish church in the 16th century. After Montearagón, the rights subsequently passed to the Bishop of Barbastro (1571), a relationship that remained in place until the Concordat between Church and State in 1851. Since then, it has belonged to the diocese of Pamplona.

Rectangular in plan, with three central naves, the central one wider than the lateral ones, it bears a strong resemblance to the church of Santa María la Real in Sangüesa. Of the side aisles, the northern one is wider than the southern one.

The choir, in Gothic style, was built at the end of the 14th century. Later, in the 18th century, the building was enlarged by destroying the three apses, over which two columns and a dome were erected.

Dating from the late 12th century, the doorway is a semicircular, splayed, slightly lowered arch, with archivolts forming six thick baquetones whose extradoses are decorated with floral borders, plant motifs, and checkered patterns. [8] [9]

The tympanum and lintel are Gothic additions; the tympanum depicts Saints Peter, Andrew, and James, and the lintel depicts scenes from the life of Saint Peter.

The cloister is attached to the medieval structure of the building on the Gospel side. It must have been built in the mid-13th century in the Cistercian style. It has a square floor plan, although irregularly arranged, as three of its facades have seven semicircular arches and the fourth has eight.

At the level of the transept, on the south side, rises a large 54-meter-high tower, unique in Navarrese Gothic architecture, built on the walls of Olite.

It has several levels and stretches 32 meters from the base to the terrace, with a small balcony and a quadrifolio parapet. The 22-meter-high spire that extends from here is octagonal, with rectangular windows with pointed arches and small windows."
