"It is a Baroque-style palace with a central courtyard, located in Oviedo's Cathedral Square. The building dates back to the mid-18th century and was commissioned by the 3rd Marquis of Camposagrado, and has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest in the Monument category. Located in Plaza Porlier, next to the Cathedral, it has currently been the headquarters of the High Court of Justice of Asturias since 1989."

"The Composgrado Palace dates back to 1698, when the Bernaldos de Quirós family began a series of renovations to their properties, which included the building's land. The renovations were initially commissioned to Pedro Fernández Lorenzaga and Domingo Suárez Solar, who included the construction of a building on the same site among their submitted projects, which was rejected. It was not until 1719 when the architect Francisco de la Riva began work on a new building commissioned by the Marquis of Composagrado, even constructing foundations and facades similar to the Palace of the Duke of Parque. The construction was resumed by the architect Pedro Antonio Menéndez de Ambás in 1744, with the majority of it completed in 1752. Although it is known as the Palace of Camposagrado, it is not very representative of that noble title, because its owner began to use it in the last nine years of his life, his children were not born there and his grandson, the fifth Marquis of Camposagrado, the only one who was born there, married and lived in Barcelona where he is considered a leading man of the city, dying without descendants."

Architectural Marvel of the Baroque Era

The Palacio de Camposagrado is a prime example of Baroque architecture in Oviedo, with its construction spanning from the late 17th to the mid-18th century. Commissioned by the Bernaldos de Quirós family, the palace underwent several design and construction phases involving architects like Francisco de la Riva and Pedro Antonio Menéndez de Ambás. Its imposing facade, characterized by intricate stonework and a grand scale, reflects the opulence and style of the period. The palace's rectangular layout, centered around a courtyard, is typical of palatial residences of the era, designed for both living and showcasing status. Reddit

Despite its grandeur, the palace's history is marked by periods of limited occupancy by the Camposagrado family themselves. It was intended to be a significant residence, but its owners often lived elsewhere. The building has also faced challenges, including damage during the October Revolution in 1934, necessitating subsequent refurbishments. Today, its role as the High Court of Justice of Asturias since 1989 underscores its continued importance and integration into the city's civic life. Reddit

Visitors are encouraged to appreciate the architectural details from the exterior, noting the stylistic elements that define its Baroque character. The palace's integration into the urban fabric of Oviedo, standing proudly next to the Cathedral in Plaza Porlier, makes it a key landmark for understanding the city's historical and architectural landscape. Historical Significance and Civic Role

The Palacio de Camposagrado is more than just a beautiful building; it's a site steeped in Asturian history. Its origins trace back to the late 17th century, with significant construction phases in the early and mid-18th centuries. The palace was commissioned by the Marquis of Camposagrado, a title granted by King Philip IV. The architectural plans evolved over time, with different architects contributing to its final form, aiming for a design that rivaled other prominent palaces in the region. Reddit

Its location in Plaza Porlier, a central and historically significant square in Oviedo, further cements its importance. For many years, the palace has served a crucial civic function. Since 1989, it has been the headquarters of the High Court of Justice of Asturias, a role that dictates its current accessibility. This dual identity—a historical monument and an active seat of justice—adds a unique layer to its presence in the city. Reddit

While direct interior access for tourists is often restricted due to its judicial function, the palace remains a vital part of Oviedo's heritage. Its designation as a Site of Cultural Interest highlights its recognized value. Understanding its historical trajectory, from a noble residence to a modern judicial center, provides a deeper appreciation for this landmark. Reddit
