Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the church's stunning and well-preserved Baroque interior, particularly the golden altarpieces and the image of the Virgin of the Street. Its historical significance as a former Jesuit church and current shrine is also noted. Some feel it deserves more publicity for its cultural importance.

""The church was built by the Society of Jesus between 1584 and 1599, hence its popular name as the Church of "The Society".

It was originally dedicated to Saint Lawrence. After the Order's expulsion from Spain in 1767,the building became a parish church and shrine when the image of the city's patron saint, the Virgin of the Street, better known as "La Morenilla", was placed inside. Its feast day is celebrated every 2nd of February. In the closing decades of the 19th century, the Diocesan Seminary was built as an annex to the building.

The highlights of the church's interior include a magnificent main altarpiece, made in the mid-18th century by Pedro de Bahamonde, which includes images of Saint Lawrence and other saints of the Order, such as Saint Francis Xavier and Saint Ignatius of Loyola.

Seat of the Brotherhood of the Most Holy Christ of Mercy,an image made by Juan de Valmaseda in the 16th Century.

It has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest and a Historic-Artistic Monument."

Mark Auchincloss

"Built in the late 16th century by architects of the Society of Jesus, the church features a single nave with three bays, with its characteristic facade.
The main altar is Baroque in style, with Rococo influences."

Maguel

"A beautiful church, but I think it should be given more publicity because it houses the patron saint of Palencia. Also known as the Company. Declared a Cultural Heritage Site."
