What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the unique and eccentric nature of Salvador Dalí's former home, offering an intimate glimpse into his surreal world and artistic process. The gardens are also a highlight, providing a beautiful and artistic space. However, some find the house's contents unusual or even 'trashy,' and booking tickets well in advance is essential due to limited capacity.
"Very interesting place!!! Incredible to be in one of the places where Dalí lived and the work he did himself to make the house so special. The view from the “Yellow room” was amazing, perfectly designed with a mirror on the left side of it to reflect the sunrise 🌅 in his bed. The circular room (not sure it had a name) had a surprisingly weird surround system like, in its very center, can’t explain it, you have to go and experience it for yourself. Must mention our tour guide Cristina who provided the nice tour full of interesting information. A must do while in Cadaqués."

"I bought our tickets about two months in advance so we were ready. What we were not ready for was how cool the house was!! We had a friendly guide where took us through and spoke English and French to the rest. I loved that they had lockers free of charge available for larger bags. Also the Caffe by the entrance has a cute balcony on the top floor and tables outside. It was uplifting to soak up the local atmosphere."

"Visited without booking and we could not get tickets to enter house as it was fully booked so recommend booking before going.
We visited the gardens though, ticket 6 euro and well worth a visit as it has a lot of Dali's touches.
Also bar and beach for a beer, coffee and stroll amongst the boats."

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
The most common way is to take a train from Barcelona to Figueres, then a bus or taxi to Cadaqués. From Cadaqués, you can walk to Portlligat (about 20-30 minutes, though it's a steep hill) or take a short taxi ride. Some visitors opt for organized day tours from Barcelona that include transport.
Yes, it's possible but ambitious. You'd need to plan your transport carefully, likely involving trains and buses. Starting very early is recommended to fit in the Dalí House-Museum, lunch, and Girona.
Many visitors enjoy the scenic walk between Cadaqués and Portlligat, which takes about 20-30 minutes. Be prepared for a steep incline. Taxis are also available for a quicker, less strenuous option.
Parking in Portlligat can be very limited, especially during peak season. It's often recommended to park in Cadaqués and walk or take a taxi to the museum.
It's a very packed day, but doable if you start early. The two locations are about an hour apart by car or public transport. Many visitors choose to focus on one or the other for a more relaxed experience.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
It's highly recommended to book tickets several weeks in advance, especially during the tourist season (July-August), as they can sell out a week or two ahead.
Yes, there are tickets for the house tour and separate tickets for the gardens. The house tour is a timed entry, while garden tickets offer access to the grounds.
The guided tours inside the house typically last around 30 minutes, offering a glimpse into Dalí's personal space.
Information on discounts can vary. It's best to check the official website for any available concessions for students, seniors, or children.
Missed timed entry slots are generally not refundable or exchangeable, so it's crucial to arrive on time for your booked tour.
🎫 🧭 Onsite Experience
Inside, you'll find a labyrinth of rooms, personal spaces, and artistic studios that Dalí lived and worked in. It's filled with his eccentric decor, memorabilia, and reflects distinct moments of his life.
The house itself is a historic and complex structure with many levels and narrow passages, which can make it challenging for those with mobility issues. The gardens offer more accessibility.
Photography rules can vary, but generally, interior photography might be restricted to protect the artworks and preserve the atmosphere. Check for signage upon arrival.
Guided tours are typically offered in English, Spanish, Catalan, and French, catering to a diverse range of visitors.
The egg is a symbol of life, fertility, luck, and wealth, which were important to Dalí. You'll see it incorporated into the house's design.
🍽️ 🍽️ Food & Dining
There is a bar and a beach area near the museum where you can grab a coffee or a beer and enjoy the surroundings. For full meals, you'll find more options in the nearby town of Cadaqués.
Portlligat is a small fishing village, so expect fresh seafood. Cadaqués offers a wider range of restaurants, from casual tapas bars to more upscale dining, often featuring Mediterranean cuisine.
It's generally best to consume outside food and drinks in designated areas or before entering the museum to respect the historical site.
📸 📸 Photography
The exterior of the house, the unique architectural elements, the olive grove garden, and the views of the Portlligat bay offer fantastic photo opportunities.
While interior photography is often restricted, photography in the gardens is usually permitted, allowing you to capture the artistic landscape and unique sculptures.
A versatile lens (like a 24-70mm) is great for capturing both the architectural details and wider garden shots. A wide-angle lens can be useful for the unique interior spaces if photography is allowed.
