There are several guided tours that take you from Madrid city center to the Escorial, and you even can combine the tour with a visit to the Church of The Valle de los Caídos, the impressive Church carved in the mountain, at the time Franco ruled in Spain."

Photos are not permitted inside sadly. It consists of the monastery, basilica, an exqusite priceless library, royal tombs and palace. A simply sumptious place to visit and a WHS at that. Hard to do it justice with just an iphone camera."
