What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Ermita de la Virgen de Gracia as a significant religious and heritage site, particularly during the vibrant annual Pilgrimage. The serene setting in the Herrería forest is also a highlight, offering a peaceful escape. However, some find interior access to be limited, requiring careful planning to experience the full site.
"We attended the rosary and Mass on Sunday during the Pilgrimage of Our Lady of Grace, and we found it a wonderful and highly recommended experience. There were so many people, especially from the town and the Peñas. And there was a sung Mass, I think especially by the Peña Zipi y Zape group, who sing wonderfully.
I'm posting some photos of the occasion.
The Hermitage of Our Lady of Grace is one of the most representative religious and heritage sites in San Lorenzo. Dedicated to the town's patron saint, it is not only a place of devotion but also a place steeped in history, tradition, and cultural value for the town's inhabitants.
Its origins date back several centuries, when the local community decided to build a small shrine in honor of Our Lady, to whom special graces and favors were attributed. Over time, the hermitage has undergone extensions and renovations that have always respected its simple and welcoming character, maintaining the atmosphere of contemplation that so characterizes it.
Architecturally, the chapel stands out for its sober style, with a humble and harmonious façade that reflects the popular spirit with which it was conceived. Inside, the undisputed centerpiece is the image of the Virgin of Grace, venerated with profound devotion by the residents of San Lorenzo. The carefully preserved statue occupies the center of the altar and becomes a point of reference both during liturgical celebrations and during the daily visits of the faithful who come to give thanks or ask for protection.
The chapel comes to life especially during the patron saint's festivities, when the Virgin is the centerpiece of processions, floral offerings, and mass religious events that bring together not only the town's residents but also visitors and devotees from nearby towns. These celebrations constitute a moment of community unity, where tradition and faith are intertwined with local identity.
In addition to its religious significance, the chapel is also a meeting place for the historical and cultural memory of San Lorenzo. Its presence recalls the importance that spirituality and community life have played in the construction of the town, becoming an enduring symbol of its roots.
In short, the Hermitage of the Virgin of Grace is not merely a religious building: it is an emblem of faith, history, and tradition that continues to mark the life of San Lorenzo and its people, keeping alive the connection between past, present, and future."

"On the second Sunday of the month of September, the Pilgrimage of Our Lady of the Virgin of Grace is celebrated in San Lorenzo de El Escorial.
It is a festival declared of National Tourist Interest. The second most visited pilgrimage in Spain, after the Romería del Rocío.
In my case a family tradition. And a reunion with people that, sometimes, you only see that day.
A marvel!"
