Reviews Summary

Visitors find Puerta de Santiago to be a historically significant and architecturally interesting city gate, often overlooked but rewarding to discover. The adjacent Puppet Museum is a delightful surprise, and the Garden of the Poets offers a peaceful spot with lovely views. Some note the lack of facilities and historical interpretation directly at the gate itself. Reddit+1

"Puerta de Santiago - Door of Santiago, name that took to be near the old Church of Santiago, demolished in 1836, and that served as access to those who arrived by the Carretera de Arévalo and from the neighborhood of San Marcos.

Some authors identify it under the name of Puerta de Rodrigo Ordóñez, stating that from 1247 and 1290 it will be when it acquires the name of Santiago. It was also known as "El Refugio" because it was the place chosen by the City Council of Segovia to give asylum to the poor of the city. Later, in the 50s of the last century, the painter Santos Sanz installed his house there.

On the inside, a "badly drawn horseshoe arch" is opened, as Chaves Martín describes, which may be from the 13th century. On the other hand, the external face has a semicircular arch made with padded voussoirs15, work of the late seventeenth century, or early eighteenth. This entrance was closed with a rake and with a double door of two leaves each, something that we know thanks to the holes where the hinges went that have lasted until today.

Next to this stretch of the wall, is the Garden of the Poets, where we can take a break and enjoy the landscape that opens before us with the Monastery of Santa María del Parral in the background."

"No facilities. No attempt to say why this city gate is historic. Pilgrim credentia may be stamped."
