Prepare for a Challenging Hike

This isn't a casual stroll! The Sierra de Bernia trail is rated medium to high intensity, with rough terrain and some scrambling. Be sure to wear sturdy hiking boots and bring at least 2 liters of water per person. Some sections can be tricky to navigate, so a good map or GPS is recommended.

Timing is Everything for the Forat

The famous 'Forat' (hole) through the mountain offers a unique experience, but timing can impact your views. Hiking in the afternoon, especially in November, can mean a chilly start followed by a sun-drenched sunset view as you emerge. Be aware that some paths can be poorly marked, so careful navigation is key.

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the unique Forat de Bernia tunnel and the breathtaking 360-degree views from the summit. The challenging ridge hike is a highlight for many, offering a rewarding adventure. However, some find the trail markers confusing and the terrain more difficult than expected, advising caution and good preparation.

"2-3 hours walk around the mountain with beautiful views. Bernia offers the unique view because there is a tunnel that goes through the mountain. I started around 3 pm (November) and it was shady and chilly on one side but when I went through tunel I was hit by the sun falling to sunset and had one of the best views ever."

"Brilliant ridge hike/climb. Completed with a group of 14 and took 8hrs car to car. Only needed to do one abseil and the rest was easy down climbing/scrambling. One small section of bolts to protect the fin but climbing here was also easy. Stunning 360 degree views all day but occasionally chilly in the wind."

Lucy Tomlinson

"What an amazing day and experience.
The place was very unique.
We parked in a restaurant close by and walked towards the mountain. There are two routes to take. One was to circle the top of the mountain which takes something like 4 hours walk and the second is to Altea. We did the first option. The signs needs renewal as some are warned off from the sun and some marking of where to go are difficult to be seen. I would be very careful as we were mistaken two times and had to go back. The terrain is not easy to walk on and you should be fit to walk. The maps says low to medium intensity but I would say medium at minimum.
The hole in the mountain that connects the sides is such a breathtaking experience and to see Benidorm on the other side is so beautiful. You will need to crawl on your knees when in the tunnel and from that point you have 45 minutes to the old Roman ruins. From the ruins it takes one hour to get to the car. I would suggest 2 liters of water per person. Enjoy."
