Timing is Everything for the Forat

The famous 'Forat' (hole) through the mountain offers a unique experience, but timing can impact your views. Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the unique Forat de Bernia tunnel and the breathtaking 360-degree views from the summit. The challenging ridge hike is a highlight for many, offering a rewarding adventure. However, some find the trail markers confusing and the terrain more difficult than expected, advising caution and good preparation.

"2-3 hours walk around the mountain with beautiful views. Bernia offers the unique view because there is a tunnel that goes through the mountain. I started around 3 pm (November) and it was shady and chilly on one side but when I went through tunel I was hit by the sun falling to sunset and had one of the best views ever."

"Brilliant ridge hike/climb. Completed with a group of 14 and took 8hrs car to car. Only needed to do one abseil and the rest was easy down climbing/scrambling. One small section of bolts to protect the fin but climbing here was also easy. Stunning 360 degree views all day but occasionally chilly in the wind."

Lucy Tomlinson

"What an amazing day and experience.
The place was very unique.
We parked in a restaurant close by and walked towards the mountain. There are two routes to take. One was to circle the top of the mountain which takes something like 4 hours walk and the second is to Altea. We did the first option. The signs needs renewal as some are warned off from the sun and some marking of where to go are difficult to be seen. I would be very careful as we were mistaken two times and had to go back. The terrain is not easy to walk on and you should be fit to walk. The maps says low to medium intensity but I would say medium at minimum.
The hole in the mountain that connects the sides is such a breathtaking experience and to see Benidorm on the other side is so beautiful. You will need to crawl on your knees when in the tunnel and from that point you have 45 minutes to the old Roman ruins. From the ruins it takes one hour to get to the car. I would suggest 2 liters of water per person. Enjoy."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Iconic Forat de Bernia

The Forat de Bernia is the undisputed star of this mountain range. This natural tunnel, carved by erosion, pierces through the heart of the Sierra de Bernia, connecting its two sides. To pass through, you'll need to crawl on your knees for a short distance, adding an element of adventure to the experience. Emerging from the Forat is often described as a magical moment, with a sudden shift in light and a breathtaking reveal of the landscape on the other side. Reddit

Many visitors find the transition through the Forat particularly memorable. Depending on the time of day and year, the light can dramatically change, offering unique photographic opportunities. Some describe it as stepping into another world, with the expansive views of the coast or the inland valleys unfolding before them. It's a truly unique geological feature that sets Sierra de Bernia apart from other hiking destinations. TikTok

Pro Tip: Be prepared for the darkness inside the tunnel. While short, having a small flashlight or using your phone's light can be helpful, especially if you're not accustomed to low-light conditions. The rock can be damp, so consider wearing gloves if you prefer. Reddit

Navigating the Sierra de Bernia Trails

The Sierra de Bernia offers a network of trails, with the most popular being the circular route that encompasses the Forat and the summit. This ridge hike is known for its stunning 360-degree views, but it also presents significant challenges. The terrain is often rough and rocky, with sections requiring scrambling and careful foot placement. Reddit

Several reviews mention that trail markers can be inconsistent or worn, making navigation a potential issue. It's highly recommended to have a reliable map, a GPS device, or a hiking app downloaded on your phone. Some hikers have reported getting lost or taking wrong turns, so paying close attention to your route is crucial. The intensity is often underestimated, so be prepared for a demanding trek. Reddit

For those seeking a more adventurous experience, there are sections with chains and ropes to assist with steeper climbs, particularly on the way to the highest peak. While these add to the thrill, they also increase the difficulty. It's advisable to assess your fitness level and experience before attempting the more challenging parts of the trail. Reddit

Best Times for Views and Comfort

The views from Sierra de Bernia are spectacular year-round, but the timing of your visit can significantly impact your experience. Many hikers recommend visiting in the late afternoon, especially during autumn months like November. This timing allows for a cooler start to the hike, with the sun emerging as you pass through the Forat, leading to a beautiful sunset over the landscape. Reddit

Conversely, visiting during the morning can offer clear, crisp views, particularly in spring and summer. However, this is also when crowds tend to be higher, and the midday sun can be intense. If you plan to hike during warmer months, starting early is essential to avoid the heat and potential dehydration. TikTok

Consider the weather as well. While sunny days offer the best visibility, strong winds can make the ridge sections feel chilly and exposed. Checking the weather forecast before you go is always a good idea to ensure you're prepared for the conditions. Reddit
