Reviews Summary

Bodega Numanthia is highly regarded for the exceptional quality and power of its Tinta de Toro wines, particularly those from old vines. However, some visitors find the tasting fees to be quite high for the included pours and accompaniments, leading to a mixed perception of value for the overall experience.

"We visited Numanthia and came away very disappointed. Their wine, as expected, was very good. The guide took us to the vineyard and explained how the soil conditions and geography contributed to the quality of the wine.
However, the 60€ pp tasting for a cold glass of Termes and Numanthia, with a small bowl of picos, left a bad taste in my mouth and my wallet. Adding a tasting of Termanthia would have been a 150€ “experience”. Thank you, but no thank you!

Wine shipping was not provided nor purchasing a corkscrew was available.

One would expect a wine of this quality would also have offered an equally equivalent wine tasting experience.

My 2-star review would have been 1 star, but quality of the wine biased this review."

Isaac Maldonado

"Very good tour and the guide was excellent as well. Why one star? I guess for 40 euros a person I was expecting a bottle of wine at the end of the tour, instead my wife and I (80 euros) was give 1 wine opener. I can not in good faith recommend such an expensive tour. In any other bodega that the same tour would be 10 euros a person."

Charlie Teena

"Quant, high quality wines produced from vines up to 120 years old. Remarkable accompaniment to food."

Deep Dives

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Legacy of Old Vines

Bodega Numanthia is celebrated for its commitment to preserving ancient Tinta de Toro vines, some dating back over 120 years. These venerable vines, deeply rooted in the Valdefinjas terroir, are crucial to the exceptional quality and intensity of their wines. The limited yields from these old vines contribute to the concentrated flavors and complex structure that define wines like Numanthia and Termanthia. TikTokReddit

Exploring the vineyards offers a tangible connection to this winemaking heritage. Visitors can witness firsthand the gnarled trunks and resilient nature of these vines, understanding how they thrive in the challenging climate and unique soil conditions of the region. This deep respect for the vineyard is a cornerstone of the Numanthia philosophy, ensuring the continuation of a rich winemaking tradition. Instagram

Understanding the Valdefinjas Terroir

The specific location of Bodega Numanthia in Valdefinjas, within the Toro Designation of Origin (DO), plays a pivotal role in shaping its wines. The region is characterized by a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters, and soils rich in sand and clay. This environment, combined with the altitude, creates ideal conditions for the Tinta de Toro grape to develop its full potential. TikTokInstagram

This unique terroir imparts distinctive characteristics to the wines, including robust tannins, deep color, and intense fruit aromas. The winery's meticulous approach to viticulture aims to express these nuances, allowing the land to speak through each bottle. Understanding the interplay between the soil, climate, and vine is key to appreciating the depth and complexity of Numanthia's offerings. Reddit

The Numanthia Wine Experience: Value and Expectations

Bodega Numanthia produces wines of undeniable high quality, with Termes, Numanthia, and Termanthia consistently receiving accolades. However, the tasting experience itself has drawn mixed reviews regarding its perceived value for money. Some visitors feel that the tasting fees, which can range from €40 to €60 per person, do not always align with the quantity or perceived 'experience' offered, especially when compared to other bodegas. Reddit

While the wine quality is rarely disputed, the overall tasting package—sometimes including just a small bowl of 'picos'—has led to disappointment for some. It's important for potential visitors to set clear expectations: you are paying for access to taste exceptional wines and learn about their production, rather than for an elaborate culinary or extensive pour experience. For those prioritizing the wine itself and the insights into its creation, the visit can still be very rewarding. InstagramReddit
