What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the City Hall Air-raid Shelter to be an impressive and educational free museum, offering a poignant glimpse into Valencia's wartime history. While the visit is brief, the preserved shelter and informative exhibits leave a lasting impression. Some visitors note that the documentaries are particularly insightful.
"In 1936, at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, the capital of the Second Republic was transferred to Valencia, making it a strategic target.
As a consequence, bombing attacks on the city increased. In order to protect the population, a number (around 50) of air-raid shelters were built, using both public and private buildings and basements.
Today it is possible to visit a few of them, such as the Grupo Escolar del Ayuntamiento de València one, a small shelter built inside a school and made up of five spaces covered with low concrete vaulting (which also had toilets and electricity).
Mainly for the central location and the opening times, this is the best one to know a little bit more about a dark page of the city history (although some alterations were made in the 1950s)."
