What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Plaça de l'Església Vielha to be a charming and historically significant church in the heart of Vielha. Its free admission and impressive artworks, especially the Christ of Mijaran, are frequently praised. Some note it's a typical Pyrenean church, but its central location and artistic treasures make it a worthwhile stop.
"Fascinating village church; apart from its religious significance to Vielha and Val d'Aran, there are some important artworks on display from the1600s."
Keith Birch
"Typical pyrenean church but very nice!"
Lena T
"The Christ of Mijaran is one of the most outstanding pieces of Catalan Romanesque sculpture. Originally from the church of Santa Maria de Mijaran, demolished during the Civil War, it was looted in 1936 and recovered in Switzerland in 1940. During this period, its study and recognition intensified.
The hand preserved on the right side of the torso indicates that it was part of a monumental descent, related to the Taller d’Erill. From the 12th century, these sets became frequent and, in Catalonia, they present the unique inclusion of the two thieves, Gestes and Dimes. They were probably placed on a beam, in the arcades of the apses, and could have had a symbolic or doctrinal function in response to heresies that denied the death of Christ."
