What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Pasífae Sculpture a beautiful and thought-provoking artwork, especially stunning at sunset. While its location on the beach is picturesque, the presence of local fishermen can sometimes make capturing unobstructed photos a challenge. The sculpture's connection to ancient mythology adds a rich layer of cultural significance.
"Unusual sculpture by Oscar Estruga along the beach in Vilanova. As it is a popular hangout for local fishermen, it can be difficult to get a pic or selfie of the structure without someone or something else in the pic. Nice walk out to see it in the sunset."

"Pasífae is a 1993 sculpture by Óscar Estruga.
It depicts the Greek myth of Pasiphaë, the wife of King Minos of Crete. Poseidon sent a magnificent white bull to Minos as a sign of favor, expecting it to be sacrificed in his honor. However, Minos kept the bull for himself, angering the god. As punishment, Poseidon cursed Pasiphaë to develop an uncontrollable desire for the bull.
To fulfill her infatuation, she enlisted the help of the inventor Daedalus, who constructed a hollow wooden cow where she could hide and mate with the bull. This union resulted in the birth of the Minotaur, a creature with the body of a man and the head of a bull, later confined in the Labyrinth. The sculpture represents this myth, showing the cow with the figure of Pasiphaë inside, embodying themes of divine wrath, human folly, and the blending of the mortal and the monstrous.
The text below the sculpture says “Our city, bathed by the same sea that bathes Crete, recognizes itself in the Mediterranean civilization.
“Pasiphaë, daughter of the Sun, suffered a mad passion for the whitest bull in the herd of her husband Minos, king of Crete.”"

"Very beautiful, even though some tourists treated it like their own camp. Still, rating the beautiful site and the monument."

The Myth of Pasífae: A Deeper Look
To fulfill her infatuation, Pasiphaë enlisted the help of the master craftsman Daedalus. He constructed a hollow wooden cow, covered in real cowhide, which Pasiphaë hid inside. Through this ingenious, albeit disturbing, contraption, she was able to mate with the bull. The result of this union was the birth of the Minotaur, a monstrous creature with the body of a man and the head of a bull, who would later be imprisoned in the Labyrinth.
The sculpture by Óscar Estruga captures this pivotal moment, symbolizing themes of divine retribution, human desire, and the blending of the mortal and the monstrous. The inscription at its base further connects this ancient myth to the present, highlighting Vilanova i la Geltrú's identity within Mediterranean civilization.
