The beauty of old charm ❤ May their love grow ever strong, too. This church, with pilasters and adobe stone walls, was started in 1834 by Dominican Fr. Jesualdo Minaño. Fr. Jose Diego (1851-1864) completed the second row of windows and Fr. Francisco Govea (1864-1867) constructed the church’s walls. Fr. Miguel Vasquez (1882-1886) galvanized the roofs in 1885.

"✍️Monumental Church
Located in the beautiful and welcoming square of the same name, with a beautiful interior steeped in history, including a pantheon with the remains of the Heroines of the sieges of Zaragoza during the War of Independence against the French troops, it invites contemplation and contemplation of the beauty within. 😔"

"This little church was a really nice place to visit.
We weren't sure if it was open, so we didn't dare go in right away. This was until an old man opened the door and explained that we could go in. When he saw we were foreigners, he explained how the church was organized. He was super kind and cheerful!
Once inside, there were very few people, which was very nice. When we finished our tour, we were about to leave when the priest came to see us and explained the whole history of the town and this church. It was great!"

The Pantheon of Heroines: A Tribute to Courage

The Pantheon of the Heroines of Zaragoza is arguably the most poignant and historically significant part of Nuestra Señora del Portillo Church. It serves as a final resting place for the remains of remarkable women who played crucial roles during the Sieges of Zaragoza against Napoleon's troops in the early 19th century. Figures like Agustina Zaragoza y Domenech, Casta Álvarez Bravo, and Manuela Sancho Bonafonte are honored here, symbolizing the collective bravery and resilience of the city's female defenders. The memorial was officially inaugurated in 1908, with King Alfonso XIII presiding over the transfer of the remains, solidifying its importance as a national monument. Reddit

Visitors often describe the experience of visiting the Pantheon as deeply moving and contemplative. It's a space that invites reflection on the sacrifices made and the often-overlooked contributions of women in historical conflicts. The detailed reliefs depicting the heroines' actions during the battles add a powerful visual narrative to the solemn atmosphere. Reddit

Beyond the historical figures, the Pantheon is also a testament to the architectural and artistic contributions to its creation. The altarpiece and reliefs were designed by renowned artists, ensuring that the tribute is as artistically significant as it is historically. It’s a place where history, art, and remembrance converge, offering a unique insight into Zaragoza's proud past. Reddit

Architectural Style and Interior Design

Nuestra Señora del Portillo Church showcases a fascinating blend of architectural influences, reflecting its long history and multiple reconstructions. The exterior, particularly the facade, exhibits Neoclassical elements, characterized by its porticoed entrance with semicircular arches and low towers, giving it a distinct horizontal emphasis. The construction is primarily of exposed brick, offering a robust and earthy aesthetic. Reddit

Inside, the church transitions to a more ornate Baroque and Rococo style. The entire interior, including walls, columns, and vaults, is painted white and enhanced with gray stucco moldings. The Rococo-style foliage, dating from around 1728, is a prominent decorative feature, adorning the dome's pendant and creating an atmosphere of elegance and lightness. This decorative scheme is further enriched by carvings of four strong women from the Bible—Esther, Judith, Jahel, and Deborah—symbolically linking the church's spiritual and historical narratives. Reddit

The church's layout features three naves of equal height, with the central nave being wider and leading to an apse. The space before the transepts is covered by a semicircular dome. The vaulting within the central nave is a semi-barrel with half-arches opening onto the transepts that connect to the side naves. This thoughtful design contributes to the church's harmonious and visually appealing interior, making it a notable example of religious architecture in Zaragoza. Reddit
