"The Luzea Tower (15th century), on Nagusia Street, in Zarautz (Gipuzkoa). A Renaissance tower meaning 'Long Tower' (High), to differentiate it from another nearby tower called 'Motza Tower' or 'Short Tower' (Low). A beautiful construction with a three-story plan (part of the crowning is missing). The ground floor is essentially military, with a single robust door and loopholes. The first floor is reached by an attached monumental staircase. Many large late Gothic twin windows emphasize the apartments' character as a residence of the high nobility. It has modillions that, together with the windbreaks on the main façade, would allow the construction of a strong scaffold in case of defense. A stronghold of the noble lineage of Zarauz, the shield above the door bears the arms of King Henry IV of Castile (1454-74), which could suggest many things, including that it performed some function of royal jurisdiction. The founding of the town (1237) would surely have been to the detriment of the manorial jurisdiction vis-à-vis the royal one, and although it is also unclear what role the Zarauz lineage played, it was surely preponderant. Restored (1923) by the architect Joaquín de Yrizar, with funds from the Bank of San Sebastián, it later became the headquarters of the Banco Hispano-Americano. Rehabilitated (2015) by the owner, the Banco Santander, as an exhibition space (interesting 16th-century paintings)."

"A beautiful tower with a Santander Bank office on the lower floor and an exhibition inside the park. The upper floor, which also has an old staircase, was closed during our visit."
