Reviews Summary

Visitors find Plaza de España in Écija to be a beautiful and unique central square, particularly appreciating its striking architecture and the novel ground-level fountain. It's a lively spot with cafes and restaurants, though some caution is advised for drivers due to potential GPS misdirections.

"I think it's a very pretty place where we can find the letters with the city's name, and a fountain where you can cool off on hot days—very simple and unique, since the jets come out of grates in the ground. I need more shade, since Écija is known as the frying pan of Andalusia!
We can also see a Roman sculpture and pond there.
What did creep me out a little is that it's practically at the same height as the road, and while driving there, a car in front of us accidentally drove into the square, as its GPS indicated it would! Thank goodness there was no one around."

Barinia Alonso

"It is popularly known as "The Hall." The open, rectangular plaza surrounded by historic and religious buildings is striking. Its current layout dates back to 1843. One of its important buildings is the Town Hall, which is currently being restored; the provisional one is located on one of the side streets. Beneath the plaza is a parking lot, and archaeological remains are still preserved. Many of the remains found are in the Municipal Historical Museum."

Katy

"This is the main square of Ecija. It is surrounded by elegant buildings. A few café and restaurant terraces liven up the place. Covered and paid parking under the square."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History and Layout of 'The Hall'

Plaza de España, affectionately known as 'The Hall,' is the heart of Écija and boasts a history that stretches back centuries. Its current layout, established in 1843, features a striking open, rectangular design. The plaza is notable for its unique ground-level fountain, where water jets emerge from grates, providing a refreshing spectacle on hot Andalusian days. This design is both practical and visually engaging, offering a cool oasis in a region known for its high temperatures. Reddit

Beneath the surface of this historic square lies a significant archaeological treasure trove. A parking lot now covers the area, but it was constructed with an awareness of the historical importance below. Archaeological remains are preserved, and many artifacts unearthed have found their way into the Municipal Historical Museum, offering deeper insights into Écija's past. The presence of a Roman pond further underscores the ancient roots of this central gathering place. Reddit

The buildings surrounding Plaza de España are as much a part of its charm as the plaza itself. These elegant structures, a mix of historic and religious architecture, create a grand and imposing atmosphere. While the Town Hall, a key building, has undergone restoration, its provisional location on a side street ensures civic functions continue. The terraces of cafes and restaurants that line the plaza add a vibrant, modern layer to its historical significance, making it a dynamic space for both locals and visitors. Reddit

Navigating Écija's Heat

Écija is famously known as 'The Frying Pan of Andalusia' due to its scorching summer temperatures. Plaza de España, being an open, exposed square, can become particularly intense during the hottest parts of the day. Visitors are strongly advised to plan their visits during the cooler morning or late afternoon hours to comfortably explore and enjoy the space. Reddit

To combat the heat, visitors can seek refuge in the shade provided by the elegant historic buildings that surround the plaza. The numerous cafe and restaurant terraces also offer shaded seating, allowing you to relax with a drink or a meal while escaping the sun's direct rays. The unique ground-level fountain, while visually appealing, is more for cooling the air than for direct water play, so be prepared for the ambient heat. Reddit
