Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the National Museum Colombo for its vast collection showcasing Sri Lanka's rich history, art, and culture, housed within a stunning colonial-era building. While some sections could benefit from updates and clearer labeling, it remains a must-see for history buffs and those seeking a deeper understanding of the island's heritage.

"Beautiful museum with a vast collection of Sri Lankan history, art, and culture. The building itself is stunning and worth a visit. Some sections could use better upkeep and clearer labels, but overall a must-see in Colombo"

Kevin Garnet

"Must visit for all history buffs this place has exhibits of cultural, political and natural histories of the island (SriLanka). The main building has the history of the island through the lens of early human settlements, political dynasties and more recent colonial invasion. It's all arranged in chronological order based on the different historical time periods, making it a great overview of Sri Lanka as a whole. The accompanying building has natural history, which covers more of the archaeological findings in different parts of the island. It's also located in a beautiful Italian-style architecture building that is over 100 years old.
My only gripe is that, once you enter the main building, the only way out is through - i.e. you have to finish the walking path through all sections, and there's no exit in between (they're all blocked off). If people get tired midway or want to leave, they have to walk the full length of all the displays."

"The National Museum is worth a visit to get a glimpse of the country’s history and culture. However, it feels outdated and clearly needs an urgent renovation, as the building and exhibitions look quite old. A good place to spend some time, but it could be much better with modern updates."
